Close Encounters of the Third Kind is still the best pure Sci-Fi film I've ever seen.

For Sci-Fi/Other Genre there are far too many to list.

Aliens is my favourite film of all time and I love The Thing too.

    2001: A Space Odyssey.

Nothing else in the sci-fi genre comes close to the brilliance of this film imo.

    Akira
    I, Robot

How do you differentiate the two? LA's pretty much just a clone of the first film with a better version of the theme tune:

Well I would consider myself a huge fan of John Carpenter movies.
Escape from New York is one my favourites. For me it's perfect in it's pacing, maybe not for todays audience who are used to quick cuts and shaky cam. The music is amazing. Snake Plissken is just a great anti-hero. Kurt Russells performance is perfect. The fact that Plissken tries so hard to be the bad ass that his name seems to suggest yet under it all he ultimately wants to do good and that actually annoys him always puts a smile on my face. Then you've got a fantastic cast, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Donald Pleasance, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau and Lee Van Cleef. It's a movie of it's time. It feels early 80's. It had a small budget yet it manages to look like New York is a prison.

I Love Escape from L.A. but it's a whole different ball game. It's big budget yet looks a bit naff at times, it's like an MTV version of the first film but in a way that was on purpose. This was L.A. so it had to be a little more of an ott prison, it's the silly town, Hollywood. Despite all the dodgy stuff and sillyness Russell got it bang on and that's what holds it together. Here's Snake walking through all this crap and he hasn't changed at all. It also has a great original ending.

Feck ya, now I wanna watch em both again. :)

IMHO, the best sci-fi films of the last decade are the following... no particular order-

    Moon
    District 9
    Star Trek
    The Prestige
    Primer
    Children Of Men
    2046
    Serenity
    Sunshine
    The Fountain

The 70's were a golden age for sci-fi films. Logan's Run, Omega Man (based on I am legend, but with funkier hairdos) Colossus: The Forbin Project are to mention a few of the better ones.

That's a great film. And definitely one not enough people have seen.

I'm going to suggest Forbidden Planet. To me it's the purest science fiction film there is.

It has this incredible sense of awe throughout... fantastic special effects that still hold up perfectly well and a wonderful concept behind it all.

Some gems that may not have been mentioned:

Outland: a western set in deep space, apparently it was Duncan Jones biggest influence for Moon.

Primer: a complete head f*ck of a movie that tries to look at the actual logistics of time travel, be thankful Back to the Future didn't take things as seriously.

Castle in the Sky: A typically stunning Miyasaki fairy tale with sci-fi themes.

Alright guys, there's an awful lot of listing (the bad kind of listing) without reasoning going on.

I think the OP has plenty of viewing material for his upcoming binge.

    Happy viewing.
