Sony, Samsung, or Philips. In what ever size you want with built in MPEG4 tuner for the Irish DTT channels.

All the Sony models with freesat tuners also have an MPEG4 tuner for Irish DTT.
Recently got myself a Sony KDL-32W5810. Its a cracking TV and futureproofed!

No such thing as future proof as they keep on moving the goal posts and forcing us to upgrade equipment over time - the swine ;):D

uhf vhf dtt Its no wonder i get confused .Come the revolution all abbreviations are being banned .
So basically as long as i buy a tv with a vhf bit everything else will be alright?
I was told Panasonic came out best in a Which survey but i cant find one locally .Ive seen Sony and LG locally . Because the majority of the tv i will watch is not HD the conversion software appears to be the important bit so i am told .

    No.
Buy a tv with an mpeg4 digital terrestrial tuner for digital terrestrial television [dtt]

Make sure it is mpeg4 and not mpeg 2 [the uk standard] otherwise you will have sound and no picture on the irish digital channels if you get them that way.

All tv's most likely sold in the republic have vhf tuners.
If you buy in NI,you will need to ensure it has a vhf and dtt dtuner.
DTT is digital terrestrial television, that is multichannel services broadcast on uhf.
All main transmitters in Ireland have a test service up and running right now thats actually delivering a better picture than analogue in most cases.
You will need an aerial of some sort.

Thanks to all for the advice but for the life of me i cannot find a specification that mentions either mpeg 4 or mpeg 2 .

There's a new panavision coming out over the next few months that has a freesat tuner and an mpeg 4 dtt tuner. Might be worth waiting for it.

The Sony UK and Ireland sites always fail to mention MPEG-4. This is changing now with some of the new DVB-T2 TVs on the UK site, MPEG-4 wasn't a requirement for freeview DVB-T so they probably decided not to mention it to avoid confusion. It may change on the Ireland website once Sony submits TVs for compliance testing to Irish standards.

    Hi scart

I've been considering an LG or Sony freesat TV. There are many posts regarding the LG's but none that I've seen on the Sony.

I already own a Sony V4500 MPEG-4 TV, but it has a few niggles - no MHEG-5 digital text in the Ireland setting or VHF tuner (for Mullaghanish in my case) for analogue RTÉ 1/2 in the UK setting.

Do you use the UK or Ireland setting for the TV?
If you use the Ireland setting do you get MHEG-5 digital text and freesat?
If you use the UK setting is the VHF tuner available and where are the Irish DTT channels placed 1-5 or in the 800's?

    Hi Cush,

On initial setup the KDL-32W5810 asks what country you are located, I choose the UK as i had read that if you choose Ireland the TV does not give MPEG-5 digital text.
I have all the analogue stations available in my area.
The transmitters i am using for analogue both broadcast on UHF(cairn hill + local deflector)

I am receiving the Irish DTT test transmissions with 100% signal quality.
The digital autotune facility initally placed them in the 800's but i manually moved them to the 000's. I am receiving MPEG-5 digital text on RTE1/2.

The freesat facility is working fine. I used a London post code during the freesat autotune process - 140 free TV and radio channels. BBCHD and ITVHD included.

The menu system on the TV is extremly fast and responsive and a joy to use.
The remote is also very responsive. Pointing it in the opposite direction to the TV and it still works perfectly.

Overall its a fantastic TV and i would recommend it to anybody.........

BTW saved myself 200 quid by buying online from UK, 3 day delivery. Sorry Mr Lenihan but 200quid is 200quid!

    Thanks for that scart.

I'm assuming it works like my current Sony, MHEG-5 only in UK setting for terrestrial and freesat epg and probably no VHF analogue tuner. The LG seems to be my best option.

Yeah probably by selecting your location as UK it automatically disables the VHF analogue tuner. Not 100% sure though

The LG LF7700 series is what your looking for. MPEG4 processor, both freesat and dvb-t tuners (supports RTE DTT). Has VHF&uhf as well for analogue. mheg5 and full hd. about 400stg for a 32". New Sonys are double that. Stay away from the Freesat Panasonics, they short circuited the DVB standard by using the UK DBook. This means that the dvb-t tuner is not fully compatiable with Irish DTT.

Have to agree, i installed 3 LG 46's and 2 LG 32's the other week, so easy to install and the non freesat channels are easy to get at by just pressing the freesat button SIMPLE . I dont think you can scan non freesat channels on the SONY after you install freesat which seems a bit stupid.LG 399 stg from north for 32 "
