    Hey,

I was just wondering how far in advance you can/should get your accommodation sorted out before heading over on a j1. I've found a few nice places on craigslist but i presume its a bit early to do it yet!!! But i obviously dont want to wait too long so just curious of roughly how far in advance you're able to sort it out.

    Thanks

There's no harm in looking now, people might accept your booking around this time or they'll tell you to come back to them closer to the summer.

FYI, when I first went on a J-1 visa, I spent from December to June every single day emailing and calling people for accommodation. It wasn't until three days after we arrived when we saw a sign up in the hostel that we actually got accommodation.

I would advise to start looking at prices and researching landlords. Its difficult to get places without a years lease which doesn't require a background check.

    Good luck!

    Hey OP,

we are off to Chicago this summer and have our accommodation all but sorted. We are about to send over half the security deposit in the next week or two. If the place on Craigslist falls through then look up universities where you want to go and email them telling them how many you are, who you are, where you are from and what you are looking for.

Where did you find your accommodation? Any other places that are good to look apart from craiglsist that you know of?

Where is your house/apartment in Chicago? I was there before and going back this summer. Amazing city!

How are you sending your security deposit over? Do you not think thats its very dodgy to send over money for a place that you haven't seen and to a person you don't know.

I just say this because there are so many scams over there and I personally know a girl that sent money over as a deposit and lost it all. Also I got talking to a few lads that were there last time I was there and they sent money over as a deposit and when they got there, they went to look at the house and it was in bits. There were holes in the walls and mould everywhere so they didn't stay there and lost their deposit and were back to square one looking for another place.

Just some of the stories I know that have happened to people.
