Sky and FTA channels

Sky Digital viewers have to pay a subscription to see RTÉ, TV3 and TG4 on satellite and Channel 4 on the EPG. I know that Sky charges for the Irish channels because allowing them to be FTA on satellite would enable people in Great Britain to watch it, thus increasing the cost that the Irish channels would have to pay for the rights to foreign programmes, whereas British terrestrial channels pay for rights to imported shows for 61 million people and allowing just another 4 million outside the UK (the population of the Republic) does not make a significant difference, just like viewers in the border counties of the Republic can watch BBC, UTV and Channel 4 on terrestrial. However, expecting viewers to pay subscription for Channel 4, More 4 and E4 is a rip-off because unplugging the Sky box, taking out the viewing card and putting the box on again enables viewers to watch these channels FTA, along with Sky News, CNN, Bloomberg and CNBC, as well as having ITV1, 2, 3 and 4 on the EPG. UTV is still FTA in "Other Channels".

All the channels you mention are FTA (Apart from the Irish ones obviously) whether you've an Irish sub, English sub, or no sub.
They can be added into the 'other channels' on the sky box even when you have an Irish subscription and can be this past 3 years or so.
Hundreds of stickies, threads and posts on the subject here
