Screen not working

Hey guys, hope ye might be of assistance please.
I have a dell inspiron 1520, running on vista. its just over two years old and I dont think its in warrenty. I cant remember the specs but at the time was fairly good, better graphics card and bits like that added as extras when ordering.
The problem is that when I turn it on the screen stays really really dark, I can barely see the enter password box and once I do that and it starts up I can only barely make out one or two icons on the desktop. Definitly dont have enough brightness to navigate through any menus ar anything.
I routed around online trying to find a solution but could only find ones like take out the battery and turn it on then but that didn't work. Any Ideas PLease?

It sounds like the screen inverter is gone in it. It's a relatively cheap fix i think.

Whats a screen inverter if you dont mind me asking? Drops down the voltage used to power the screen? Would that not leave the screen from completly working as I can still slightly see one or two icons. Or am I just showing my complete lack of knowledge on the subject?
