Its a world wide thing, not just Ireland. You can register a clean up on their site, here.

ok, our club signed up for this thing. we are cleaning up our local play river. something we were doing anyway, so in theory it would be good to have support from an initiative such as this. so we wrote to icu. they said we had to register with the surfrider foundation newsletter to be involved. when you do this you get horendously spammed by them. mark it as spam and your good though. ok, then you are meant to be sent some stuff to help out with your clean up project. what were we sent? rubbish. literally. hundreds of advertising posters for surfrider foundation. tons of posters. enough posters to wallpaper our flat. a load of plastic bags. some stickers, advertising surfrider foundation. one t-shirt (size small) no gloves. no tongs to pick up the nasty stuffs. so really, nothing very useful at all. not really sure about what i will do with the enormous box of junk they sent. probably dump it into a river for the irony. lmao. wonder would they like THAT picture?

I got one too! I find it particularly Ironic that the one T-Shirt (also size small) which has the slogan, "think about the ocean, rivers and lakes before using a plastic bag, come in a plastic bag!

Loads of crap I'm going to have to dispose of now. :(

Yeah I don't know what i'm going to do with all this junk. And did you notice the 'organiser's guide' manily gives instructions on promoting the campaign and not much actual help for carrying out the clean up. Very dissappointed I have to say :(

We did our clean up today.

We got 3 t- shirts, and loads of bags, but also loads of stickers and flyers which we didn't want.

Anyway, the amount of rubbish on the banks of the river was ridiculous. We filled roughly 15 of the bags they sent on just a shotrt 500m stretch of the river Nore in Thomastown.

Kilkenny Co. Co. agreed to pick up and dispose of the rubbish for us, which is good, but there was a lot of waste in the pack they sent out . . . .

We're doing our one tomorrow. Any tips you can give us, seeing you have done it already? I think I am going to fill one or two of the bags with the posters and flyers they gave us :pac:

dont be over ambitious . . .you might plan to do a few Km's, but when you realise how much rubbish there actually is, 1km is as much as you'll manage!!! especially if you're in a town . .a lot of rubbish there.

Good advice. We are doing a very short river and only plan to do the part that flows through town. However I was walking out of town along the bank today and saw soo much litter I was overwhelmed to be honest! For a while I considered going further out but you're right it would take far too long. I'll keep it short and sweet for tomorrow.
