FÁS Online Learning

    Hey Guys,

I'm currently looking for employment (something basic like shop assistant etc... or maybe office admin as I only have an Leaving Cert which I did last year).

I'm thinking about doing a course to both bulk up my CV and to keep busy. I notice that FÁS do distance learning which sounds good.

What are these courses like? How do you do them exactly? Is there a test at the end etc.... How long do they take?

And perhaps most importantly, are they respected by employers? I.e. will an employer be impressed or at least interested by somebody with a FAS course under their belt?

I'm thinking of doing Bookkeeping and Payroll because I'm pretty good at accounts etc..

    So... FAS courses?

    Thanks,
    Dean.

I started the Photoshop course and thought it was very good... however I found it hard to motivate myself to do it every day by myself- you'd want to have good discipline!!

    Hi Op

You need motivation and self discipline to keep doing them. I did the Microsoft office courses, there is no exam but if you want to get the qualification you can get it done at a test centre but you need to speak with fas about that. The Office or Mous course is brilliant if you want to get into office admin (it is far better than the ECDL but the ECDL is probably more recognisable).

To do a course like this I assume you would need the relevant software!

Well for the Photoshop one, you didn't actually have to have Photoshop. You can do the exercises through this fake Photoshop interface through the tutorials- it's really good!

FAS offer a number of distance learning courses which are independently certified by various governing bodies. Take the Microsoft and CompTIA courses for example, FAS simply provide you with the learning tools (yes you need a lot of discipline to self-study) and then FAS even sponsor the exam for you! At the end of it you certified by Microsoft of CompTIA, not FAS.

Do you need to go to FAS to see if you can do a course? If so how do they decide who can do what? For example can you only do a course if you are employed over a certain amount of time?

You need to be registered with FAS by meeting with your local "FAS Officer". They asses your experience / CV and in my experience, it was quick and painless (took one morning to sort out). I went to the FAS office prepared with all the information on the course I had in mind and within a couple of hours, I was logged in and had full access to my e-learning course of choice. The amount of time I was unemployed for was not part of the criteria.

Bottom line, FAS seem to be very lenient and helpful when it comes to the online / self study courses. When it comes to taking the exam, you must contact them a good 2 to 4 weeks before you intend on taking it as they seem to hold exam days sparingly. From when I applied to take the exam, it took a further 3 weeks before I could actually take the exam.
