The Sligo County Development Plan is under review at the moment.

There is a section in the existing plan http://www.sligococo.ie/media/Media,1945,en.pdf

See page 112 which is towards the end of the link.

In the telecommunications section it states that a mast can not be built within 1KM of a village, residential area, school etc... or within 400 meters of a private development.

This has the effect that most planning applications for mobile masts which are critical to broadband availability in rural areas are refered to an board planala where this requirement is overturned.

As an immediate means of achieving reduced exposure, base stations and mobile phone telecommunications masts should not generally be constructed within one kilometre of smaller towns, villages, residential areas, schools, community facilities, hospitals, childcare centres or nursing homes, and not within 400 metres of private dwellings.

Current CDP policy, however, imposes a restrictive "exclusion zone", which has been introduced on the grounds of health concerns. The policy severely hinders the potential for providing improved telecommunications infrastructure and has consistently been considered at variance with DoEHLG policy on the matter by An Bord Pleanala

If you think this requirement is unduly restrictive and is preventing you getting broadband, watch out for the notices that will be posted mid-march and make your voice heard.

16 and17 March 2010 (by week 48) – notices are published in the main local newspapers announcing the availability of the Draft CDP 2011-2017 and ER for public debate; public consultation will extend over minimum 10 weeks.
