Medical Card

Hi, I'm applying for a medical card as I lost my job with the hse as a phlebotomist late last year and have been looking for any type of work as well as phlebotomy work but no luck. I am currently on job seekers allowance €196 per week, €100 goes to my bank loan per week because they are going to take me to court and €50 per week to the credit card company as they said that they will do the same which leaves me with €46 per week to live on. I have an ongoing illness which requires me to attend my G.P a few times a month and have regular blood tests etc... not to mention my medication which adds up to aprox €400 per month. I have to go to my G.P today to have the form signed so I can apply for the medical card so that is €55 now I have to pay. I have all the bank statements and prescription reciepts and proof of being on the dole to support my claim, but I'm still worried I'll be rejected. How long does the application process take:(

If your only income is the dole and you are not married, co-habitating, or under 25 & living at home, you will qualify for the medical card.

It shouldn't take more than a week or two to get the number off the HSE. The card might take a while longer to arrive but all you need is the number.

I don't think your doctor should charge you to sign the medical card form unless you are seeing them for an appointment at the same time.

You may also want to visit MABS, they are very good at negotiating with banks and credit card companies.

Your doctor should NOT charge you for signing the forms. Look for a refund and if not report him!
