Ok have a VW Polo 02 about 40k miles on it and want to trade it in for a vw golf 08-09. Checked the CBG and auto trade websites and seen a few around the €16-€17k mark anyone care to recommend one as going to be shopping around for it over the weekend & not a scooby doo about cars and their value etc. Has to be a dealer as have to trade in old car and in Dublin preferably

    Hi OP,

I have an '08 1.4 Golf GT Sport myself. The 1.4 is underpowered, but I had to get it due to insurance costs. What kind of milage are you planning on doing per year? Does spec/colour matter? How long are you planning on keeping it for? I passed my local dealer in Kildare and they have an '08 GT Sport 1.4 for €15,500...

You should be able to pick up an early MkVI like this:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201006196883584

Though it has the ancient, weedy 80bhp 1.4 litre engine.

OP i drive an 08 1.4 TSI GT Sport with 140 bhp, fairly quick not too heavy on fuel and very reliable. picked this up last october for 17000 euro from a dealer in glasnevin, gave me 3grand off a 00 1.6 golf. would thoroughly reccomend a similar golf, if you look for long enough you can get a bargain

    NO NO NO. NOOOOOOO

    Worst engine ruins the car.

1.4mpi is okay.. no fireball though. 1.6 is acceptable but thirsty...

I'd be torn between the 1.4TSI (go) and 1.9TDI (economy)... try a DSG gearbox too.. it really is awesome.

Your preaching to the converted here, I would not touch it with a barge pole.

That 1.4 litre is very underpowered making overtaking manuvers scary. It also has alot of reliability issues since it was launched in the MkIV, between burning excessive oil and having a very weak gearbox.

1.4 TSi (122bhp or 140bhp) are the obvious choice but they are rare enough on these shores and command a hefty premium even second hand.

Not looking for anything to flashy and a decent colour. Looking for a 1.2+ and dont do much mileage and plan to keep it for about 5+ years

Going to try Bradys on the Navan Road and Mcallisters in Swords tomorrow to see what they have to offer. Then again it also depends on what Mr Credit union will give me

Any decent ones out there that someone can recommend I can at least view

Got myself a 07 GT sport before christmas love the car and it has a nice bit of power too mine is the 140bhp. I managed to get it for 12000 and its only got 32000km, if your willing to spend a bit of time looking bargains will pop up.

The boss has a 07 1.6 sport, great car for what she needs, good handling but feels very underpowered on the open road. One of the issues with the Golf is that it has a very heavy body so you need a powerful engine to push it.

Depending on where you are driving, if mainly on the open road alot, I recommend TDi is the way to go and 08 for the lower road tax. Here is what I found in Dublin on carzone: http://www.carzone.ie/search/results?searchsource=finder&nParam=0&channel=CARS&cacheBuster=1266656509546462#nParam=200590%2B4294911096%2B200291%2B200298%2B102456%2B351%2B40%2B285%2B335%2B223%2B200524%2B148&sortby=Make|0&channel=CARS&currency=EUROS&searchResultsView=THUMBNAIL&maxrows=30

    Good hunting:)

08 is way over priced I've seen 140bhp 08 GT sport's priced at 15K not a hope I would touch either of those with a barge pole with that engine in them

Much better prices up north on the golf

    Way overpriced down here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

It seems that with all the VW prices their all around this price. What's the main issue with these cars. Do dealers up north take trade in on southern cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

    What about This one

Again I am not going up North to buy as wont take in trade ins. Also it seems that the prices across all volkswagen dealers is the same. Ok overpriced but its a car I have always wanted. Better to hold of for a while ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

So you've 17k to blow, why not buy a sports car like a Teggy Type R, Celica, Supra, Skyline etc and use whatevers left for insurance ;)

The diesel one is way better 1.4 is very dead. Try and get one with alloys/fogs etc if your holding it for a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

Nah not 17k to burn i wish also trading in old Polo & none of these cars appeal to me

Was looking at diesels and in no rush to buy yet but want to hold onto it for a while. No 2nd hand diesles around that I can see from dealers but maybe looking in wrong places:confused:

i would recommend not going to a main VW dealer to buy the car, keep lookin bargains can be found, the VW dealers really overcharge for cars with smaller engines and lower spec

Seems to be the case. I wonder if they ring each one up and say some bloke looking to buy a Golf lets stick together on this. Conspiracy theory ;) Just looking on CBG and Auto trader and no VW other than those with the dealers. Have dealt with dealers before and can give good warrenty etc. Also did not haggle yet so may just do well if you reduce it by x amount I maybe interested. Still looking

Just to throw another couple of options into the mix. A Skoda Octavia or Seat Leon - same mechanicals but can be had at a much better price. Most have better spec too. You might even get a 10 reg Leon demo 1.4 tsi for that kinda money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭VW 1

again i feel too expensive with this engine and not a high spec.

You're looking at the worst possible engine for a Golf. You've already been shown better specs with better engines/gearboxes for less so...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

2008 in Dundalk nice but way to many miles for my liking

Ok opinion is that the 2009 currently on offer are to expensive so is it better to hold on or ring the garages and give them the spec I require
and ask them to ring when one comes in noting the value on the 02 Polo may decrease on trade in?

Out of all the 2009 with 5 door and low mileage what is the best current offer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭veetwin

OP do yourself a massive favour and don't buy the basic 1.4l engine. Yes they all look lovely in GT spec etc but that engine is so frustrating. It sounds bad and has absolutely zero power. My OH traded in her 2005 1.4 sportsline for a new GT Sport TSI (122bhp) in 2008. What a difference. Its like they are completely different cars and while I used to dread the old one the new one is a joy. In fairness any engine is fine in them except the 1.4

Not looking for anything masisive ie 1.4+ just something to do the job powerful or not. Testing a few more and may look at 2008 cars

What about This poxy colour but:(

If you want something to just do the job then keep your current car. 1.4 standard Golfs are as miserable as motoring gets in that price bracket. Bus Eireann would appeal to me more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭Irish Gunner

Yeah was thinking of keeping it ok from reading here the 1.4 is not a well liked car but dont have the budget for anything higher

Anywho back on another one peoples view on this or is the same ie overpriced, crap engine etc and see one see them all

    GT any different ?

    Golf 2008

Hey IG. A buddy of mine *was* selling his Golf but gave up in the end. I can ask him if he still wants rid if you want. It's a 2008 GT Sport 3 door in black. 1.4 TSI engine (140 bhp) so should meet with more approval here than the standard 1.4 lump! 6 speed. Same mpg as the standard 1.4 but a lot faster. He's a big time car fan and keeps it very well looked after.

edit: whoops - just saw you're looking for 5 door.
