    It's a fairly new laptop, Windows 7.

Everytime I start downloading, I can't listen to a song, or go on youtube because of the sound. Happens with firefox, windows updates, Avira etc. I can hear it, but it's accompanied by this buzzing sound. I updated my sound card, nothing.

Sound card is realtek btw. Any help appreciated.

This is most likely a buzzing capacitor on the motherboard, also known as a singing capacitor! It seems to come and go as the component it is supplying draws or stops drawing power (or something like that!). It is unfixable unless you can identify the offending capacitor and solder on a new one. It is usually a sign of use of poor quality cap's or of extremely old cap's that are dying.
What Make/ model is the laptop?

BTW: Alot of companies will replace the unit if you make enough of a fuss about the frequency of the sound and the high dba value at the given frequency.

edit: I sympathise if it is a capacitor, it can be an extremely annoying sound that you can hear through anything. I once had an alienware sentia laptop that had that proplem out of the box. They eventually discontinued the model after a deluge of complaints about the noise. I suspect they paid more attention to capacitor quality after that.

I only bought the laptop in December. It's an Advent Roma 3000.

Can you isolate where the noise is coming on the unit with the speaker on mute?

Oh maybe I should've been clearer, it's coming through the speakers.
