What do you think Apple have in store for the next software update? I'm hoping for multi tasking, a more customizable lock screen, (and maybe Flash, but I know that one isnt going to happen.) -__-

    Activate the radio goddamnit. :pac:

No way there'll be multitasking before a hardware update (imo). Maybe some homescreen customisation, and a loosening up of bluetooth?

Apple applied for patents a while back. One of these was a home screen which changed depending on your location, and could use location tracking to notify you on the home screen if your friends using iPhones were closeby, show you the local weather, etc.

A basic form of Multitasking is supposed to be on the cards, the lock screen is also supposed to be getting a refresh, with widgets - like the jailbroken phones are doing now. Some sort of magical contact and calendar syncing is in the works too.

For those of you interesting in multitasking, here is an excellent article recently published about it:

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/0/18/inside_apples_ipad_multitasking.html

It explains Apple's and other manufacturers perspective.

Anyone know (or have seen a rumour) if we are going to see 4.0 before the new iPhone?

    Exactly......

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

What i'd like to see, i know some may be already available on jailbroken iphones, but would be nice to have them officially supported.

my asks are very small though as i can't really think of big things.

    general
    * multi-tasking - obviously.
    * short cut menus - swiping the top of screen gets you a menu for toggles (like SBSettings on cydia).
    * theme support.
    * better app management - the recently updated app manager in iTunes is not powerful enough.
    * sync with iTunes through wi-fi.

    iPod
    * last.fm scrobbling - native scrobbling of tracks/podcasts played on iPod app.

    Maps
    * ability to turn to landscape mode, it's sorely missing.

    Safari
    * refresh button - move it to the bottom bar and not have it in the address bar, i hate having to tap the top of the screen to go all the way to the top just to refresh, annoying on long pages like boards threads or use pull down to refresh like explained under Mail.
    * ability to open more than 8 tabs.

    Mail
    * pull down to refresh - anyone who uses tweetie knows of this, basically you're at the top of your inbox and you scroll up to refresh your twitter stream.

    Scrobbling?

www.last.fm is a site that keeps track of what songs you play. it builds a history of this and recommends artists you may like based on your music library.

it's also quite like facebook in a way as everyone has a profile and you can rate your music taste against others etc.

not to mention if you have a subscription it allows you to play what they call a "station" based on a genre or a specific band (where they'll play similar music to that band).

It's more likely that Apple will eventually roll out their own iTunes online service, similar to last.fm. They like to do their own thing instead of allowing plugins.

I think the radio's a no-go. The bluetooth chip may have some of the bits alright, but they might not even be capable of being powered up. It's cheaper for chip-makers to make one identical design and just enable or disable specific functionality depending on the price point. It's exactly the same thing with the tri-core Phenom processors from AMD - they're quad-core units in fact with one of them disabled. Also the radio antenna and some other electrical circuitry for it isn't there I'd imagine.

I'd like to see WiFi syncing - the iTunes bits must be there already since the Apple TV syncs over WiFi.

    I would like to see
    1. More informative lock screen
    2. Option to disable iPod Cover flow
    3. Address book smart groups
    4. Greater control over alerts and tones
    5. Better SMS message details
    6. Dedicated Wallpaper Directory
    7. Quick Method of Turning on Bluetooth & Wifi

    as I detailed here

+1 Also would like to see a quick method of Turning 3G on and off

    #1 .. Flash
    #2... Radio
#3... Apple version of Sb settings.

Personally I would say 80% of 4.0 will be security based , and don't be surprised if you see more compulsory interaction with iTunes servers etc for verification purposes .
They have been doing alot of hiring in recent months in their security Depts , we should see 1st results of the Dark Lords efforts in 4.0 :(

Would be nice. Maybe an option to have it on only when the web browser/email is open.

that's true V. Although if background processes are enabled then last.fm could run in background.

Also thought of another thing for the iPod app.

Scrolling titles. "there's no such thing as a jaggy snake" doesn't fit into the space provided.

Also to be able to hide /unhide app icons without deleting them but they show up in spotlight.

True. Just going by Apple's recent movements. I wouldn't put it past them to provide something like last.fm / pandora in the iPod app just so that they don't have to burden their battery/users with multitasking.

    also another one,

voice input to write SMS emails etc. the software infrastructure is there with voice control, and in the google mobile app has voice search.

Not if Apples feelings have not changed since this :

tbh i want to see official apps doing this, no matter how hard app developers try nothing beats the polished-ness of an apple app

ever think of the reason why apple blocked google voice apps is because they are/ maybe are developing their own and do not wish for google to get a market share?

What APPLE blocking other companies software so they can hold a market share .. NEVER !

Looks like we have 2 hopes of getting Flash aswell ....

    Wall Street Journal:
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, after reportedly calling Adobe "lazy" at an employee "town hall meeting" last month, was allegedly working hard to convince executives at The Wall Street Journal that Flash is "old technology" and that they should avoid it in their online edition. Meanwhile, an Adobe exec defended his company's platform, while acknowledging the truth of Jobs's complaint that Flash takes more CPU cycles to run on Macs than it does on Windows PCs.

Jobs reportedly continued the blunt language he used in the Apple town hall meeting, saying that Flash is full of bugs and that it crashes Macs. Flash, he said, is a "CPU hog" that has numerous "security holes." Averring that Apple doesn't "spend a lot of energy on old technology," Jobs claimed that the Mac had led the industry in dropping other obsolete technologies like floppy disks, FireWire 400, and non-LED backlit LCDs, and predicted that Flash was headed for the same destiny. He told the execs that Flash support would have cut the iPad's battery life to 90 minutes instead of the 10 hours Apple claims. Jobs urged the Journal execs to move to other rich media standards like embrace H.264-encoded video, which he said would be "trivial" for the paper to implement.

Adobe Chief Technical Officer Kevin Lynch, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal's BoomTown blogger Kara Swisher on AllThingsDigital, noted that "there's a lot of Flash content on the Web," claiming that "about 85% of the top websites have Flash on their website." He said that he hoped that continued Flash support on Android, Palm, Nokia, and RIM, among other devices "will encourage others" (Apple?) to support it as well. Lynch said that Adobe is working to minimize CPU load during video rendering, acknowledging that the task is more processor-intense for the Mac than for Windows machines.

Also another prediction which i think is a safe bet after seeing the iPad keynote.

Landscape home screens this is sorely missed by myself.

Also whilst in cover flow, there's no prev/next/fast forward/rewind or ability to choose scrubbing rate. Cover flow is a big apple selling point it's stupid that it's crippled.

Apple may hold a OS 4.0 event in March, like they have for the last 2 years.

I think we will see some sort of Multitasking, but not on current iPhones. Apple will probably up the processor on the 4G iPhone and put multitasking as its main selling feature.

I really can't see a 4g being released this year!

All the vodafone customers won't be able to get it, as they'll be locked in to contract from getting their 3gs on mod march!

People are sick to death of being robbed on o2, so they'll probably see out their o2 contracts before getting a new handset!

And to mention the price it will probably command, people just won't pay it!

Apple are not going to withhold a new product from the market because Vodafone customers signed a contract towards the 3gs end of life.

Exactly. Alot of fanboys will hold out for the 4G anway, and what about all the people who dont have an iPhone that Apple want to get their hands on?

Sure O2 released the iPhone just a few months before the 3G was released.
