Hi, I'm fairly sure the waterpump on my 98 audi a4 1.9 tdi is after letting go, the fanbelt popped off and coolent pissed out from around the waterpump. The car has 170kmiles on the clock, nct just out and it will stuggle to pass it if I fix it up (things like tires, front pads etc are all worn), so I'm thinking its not worth fixing it. Aside from repairing the car, the yearly tax of 590 is a kick in the nuts anyway.

So I'm thinking its not worth fixing, but need something to replace it that will be reliable, but smaller engine definitely, and with at least a years nct. I use the car for a 60mile round trip every day, so it will get a fair few motorway miles. I'm a bit strapped for cash at the minute, and dont want to go much over 1500quid! However I would like something newish, no older then '99 if I could! Anyone any suggestions?

..it wouldn't cost 1500 to fix the Audi.........

Ya I know that!! Its a bit of a wreck though and I wouldn't mind a change though! I'm temped by an alfa 156 but it will be over my budget and supposedly not very reliable!

I've 140k up on a 03 156. don't believe everything you hear about Alfas. Once they're maintained properly and the belts are done on time they're no worse than any other car

I fully agree, but Alfas don't like abuse. If the OP isn't the kind of person who maintains their car on time and on the button then an Alfa isn't for them, IMO.

....indeed. Come to think of it, if he doesn't maintain his car, the choice available is quite short. Mid 90's Corolla's, Micra's, Suzuki's etc.

What about the suspension issues, the thing with Alfas is it typically costs more to maintain them. Realistically a €1500 Alfa won't be wise move.

I'd agree with the €1500 alfa to an extent. It'll prob need TLC
The only problem with the suspension on them is the way Alfa Romeo produces the parts.
If a bushing or rubber goes, you can't buy it independantly from a main dealer, you have to buy a whole suspension arm. Plenty of specialists out there like Autolusso in the UK who do the parts seperately.

They often pass the NCT too even with worn suspension bushings. Not that I would condone driving a car with worn suspension just because it's NCTd.
