The wife just arrived home from work . Xtrail '05 lost power on the way home then drove away fine and just as she was nearing the house brakes started failing and car started to take off on it's own. She just got into drive way and the engine started reving couldn't turn off with the key. I just put car into gear and stalled it. thought it would go in fire , there was so much smoke coming out of it!:confused:any ideas of what's gone wrong?:confused:Sorry but i don't know much about mechanics, help would be appreciated

lucky you acted quickly to stall it. The seals went on your turbo and the oil supply to lubricate your turbo shaft became a source of fuel via failed seals. If you didn't stall it the engine would have continued to run until all the oil was consumed and then BANG goes your engine.
Sounds like a new turbo and i guess €500 plus labour.

Read up on your manual...... all manufacturers have a chapter that decribes good practice for cooling down the turbo before switching off the engine. eg. "After a period of hard driving allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes before switching off".
People who don't do this results in a very hot turbo not getting cooled (from 600C to 85C) and the turbo seals get fried in the process over time. ie The 600C heat from the red hot turbo vanes migrates to the turbo shaft and if there's no oil flowing to cool the shaft it quickly gets red hot and your seals suffer.
Hopefully your repairs won't be savage expensive and it will be back motoring soon.

A petrol engine won't run on it's engine oil when the ignition is off. When the ignition is off it won't run full stop.

The 2.0 petrol engine is non-turbo.
