    Hi all,

I am a current post graduate student studying Biomedical Science through distant learning, and I currently work in a medical device company in a junior quality assurance role that is not related to my area. I will be graduating in June with a 1.1 postgrad and I will be a registered biomedical scientist.

I want to leave Ireland as jobs related to my area are limited and every company wants 2 or 3 years experience, which I do not have. I currently have 1.5 years in a medical device company and even that is not good enough in the current climate.

I dont care where I go, but I would love to go into Biomedical Engineering/Science. I did Biomedical Engineering for my undergrad. I am wondering how I go about this? Arriving in a country without a job is not an option for me as I want to be comfortable with the transition. Is there agencies for these types of jobs? Is there anyone who have done this in the past that have experience/advice?

At present I am in talks with my current company in getting a transfer to the headquaters in the US, but the communication is slow and I am making no progress. I would like to do this on my own anyway. Although the HR staff are excellent, the company itself does not seem to want it.

Please let me know of your thoughts.

I think you need to narrow down your search to specific countries and then work on the requirements for those countries..

For example, you have the easy option of moving to any European country.. No visa's required, but language could be an issue.
Moving to the US will be a lot more difficult without a work visa or job sponsor... so options may be limited there. Language won't be an issue though
Australia won't have a language issue, but again you will need a visa
    etc etc etc..

Once you have narrowed down the options, then just use Google to look for job postings etc. in the countries you are interested in, and talk to the Agencies with those postings on their web sites.

Well you could apply to the UK from here easily and fly over the day before interviews, If they are keen maybe they would even do an initial phone interview which could save you both a lot of hassle.

You should push it more from your side with your company in the USA maybe.

Options for the states could also be some sort of funded research in a USA university, or is that new USA 1 year visa for students valid for you as a postgrad?

If you have like 3 years of work experience couldn't you apply for the skilled/professional visa for Australia or Canada.

    Best of luck

Medical device companies seem to be very recession proof in Ireland. You're right to hold onto your job while applying abroad.

Dont think your company will help for a transfer - better a case of wait and see rather than pushing for it too much.

I would contact the US/ Canadian/ Australian embassies and FAS (they used to have an overseas section) for visa and other information. Also you could send speculative applications to some US universities for research grants if you're interested in that
