Just installed Steam on a new pc (windows 7) and when i launch it and it trys to update itself, it sits there and says that it needs to be connected to the internet and exits. All firewalls and AV stuff switched off.

    Any ideas?

Be sure you are not running any of the programs listed here.

Its hardly anything to do with your network perhaps? Do you use a router, and if so are all the ports forwarded and the like?

Try deleting the ClientRegistry.blob file in the steam install folder. This probably won't work because you've just installed it from scratch and it is usually something you try with an older install.

Anytime I have issues with it connecting, deleting this usually solves the issue. It forces steam to reinitialise iteself.

It won't do any harm deleting it.
