New to renting a villa....

I am looking at renting a villa in Portugal from one of the numerous websites offering villas.

We've found a lovely place but wanted to know what the normal routine is when hired privately - the owners (dutch) and have asked for us to transfer deposit fo 25%, remainder 2 weeks prior to stay which seems reasonable.

Just wondering what we should be asking for - should we get a contract / agreement prior to sending money? Seem genuine in emails but don't want to get scammed!! Any other things to look out for / ask for?.

    Appreciate any tips.

    Hi Richard 571,
I have rented in Portugal and Greece several times, I have paid a deposit and then usually the remainder in cash on arrival. Everyone is different, if you found the property through a website you could maybe ask them what the normal practice is.
It s a great way to holiday, enjoy!!

Booking accommodation privately is a relatively scarce method in Ireland, but in the UK, 50% of all sun holidays booked are done so privately.

There are just a few things to remember (don't get lost in a haze at the amount of money you will be saving):-

    1. Ensure resort suits your requirements e.g are transfers cheap, do you have to hire a car. Is the resort busy/quiet enough? Some work on internet will resolve this.

    2. Accommodation:- How far walking distance from beach, shops, supermarket, restaurants etc? How near are the next villas? Does it have a swimming pool? Is there air conditioning? Is television, dvd player, washing machine supplied? I am assuming all other necessaries cooker etc are already there. Are there any hidden extras? Electricity, water, parking etc.

    3. Deposit:- Usally necessary but check if refundable in certain circumstances. Remember, the holiday home owner is putting some trust in you also. A deposit is usually against damage caused.
