What to buy:Pre-amps

I've noticed a few 'What to Buy'/'Advice on Gear' threads, and this is in a similar vein....maybe we are coming out of the recession after all!

    I'm looking for a pre-amp between 500-700 euro.
At the moment I'm using the stock pres on my Focusrite Saffire interface. They have been ok, but I'm looking for something with some sense of character to it maybe, as the focusrites are fairly cold. Most of the stuff I record is one track at a time, so one decent pre-amp to put everything through would hopefully add to my recordings. The main mic I use is a SeZ5600 so you know. The style of music varies.

I know that is not enough to get anything 'high-end', but any advice would be appreciated. I was looking at the UA-610 solo, and the UA-710. If anyone has any opinions on them, or anything else, or knows any used gear I could look at.

    Thanks.

I've a solo 610 and it's great. Given the choice, I'd go with the 710. Gives you tube, solid state or a mix of both. The Golden Age Project 1073 clones get a lot of love too.

that 710 looks good id like one myself.

if you need a stereo pre then the DAV bg1 is good , but it is very clean sounding - so might be a bit cold as well.

I switched from Focusrite to TC Electronics and couldn't be happier.

Not sure what they have for 700e but I'll be sticking with them for a while. Very musical sounding pres.

The interface may also play a big part in how a mic pre performs.

Yeah I was checking out some of the 1073 clones alright. That DAV preamp too.

Regarding the interface, I will be getting a 003, as I use PT aswell as Logic, and now only have an mbox for PT work, even though the 003 is probably not going to be much of step up in any way from the saffire.

I had considered getting one of the BLA 003 mods, which I had researched to be really good quality, to upgrade the converters, clock and preamps, instead of spending money on an external preamp like. That's what I wanted to do originally, but because of the way their scheduling works they're not taking any appointments till late April, which I won't be over there for, so I would have to pay for shipping and stuff which kind of put me off. So now I'm thinking what would be the best thing to do...

There is also a converter card option available for this, which a lot of folks seem to rate.
