Anybody know how long it would take to travel this route if it were to happen?

The route direct is 500nm, if the vessel does 20 kts then ~25 hrs is the time it would take to steam that distance.

latest press release doesn't sound good. Maybe the volcanic ash will encourage them.

Unfortunatly it looks like it wont go ahead any time soon:

    Its a pity.

An alternative might be the ferry from Nantes to Gijon. It could cost around €500 return for a camper and 4 people, and it takes 15 hours overnight.

Its not ideal but if you got the ferries from Ireland cheap enought it could be a good option.

Dont want to get peoples hopes up but it appears that the Gijon-Nantes ferry route has been very successful, operating at 90% capacity and on some weekends up to 40 truckes get left behind.
Based on this they want to add a second ship to the route but plan to use this second ship for a once a week run from Ireland. Details are in the link below (put it through a translator):

    Fingers crossed!

The president of the Port Authority of Gijón, Emilio Menendez announced the entry into service in early 2012 of a second ship in the sea highway between El Musel and Nantes, who also intended to be used for a ferry line Gijón connect with the Irish port of Cork once a week. With the second ship, the frequencies between Gijón and Nantes of the three scales would present five weekly and weekend probably would be used to connect Gijón with the south of Ireland, although "the shipping company has to make its calculations and costs," the president said port. LD Lines has made the boat sea highway has an average occupancy of 90% and in some cases, especially departures from Gijón on Sunday, does not have enough space to meet demand "There have been days that remained to board, waiting, more than 40 trucks," said Emilio Menendez yesterday. Regarding the possibility that LD Lines open line to Ireland, Menendez said that "we could generate tourism traffic important between Ireland and Spain. We believe that we will come to fruition and does not take long to make a line with Ireland. " The top management of the port of Gijón made these considerations during the act of delivering a gift to the 20,000 th truck traveling on the highway of the sea.The event also involved the director of El Musel, Julio de la Cueva, who pointed to the line with Nantes who has achieved the goal of 25,000 vehicles per year and is now double that raised in 2012 with the second boat, which enter service "as soon as possible." The Port Authority is committed to diversifying the traffic of the Musel, until now very marked grain port. This aims to open new lines of ferry and general merchandise. Apart from Ireland, is also trying to connect with El Musel southern England. A project for which "will take about 6 million pounds of investment to enable this new line with Portsmouth or southern England and we are in times of crisis, so this is very difficult," because companies are reluctant to invest if they do not get quick returns, something that rarely happens in this type of shipping.
