Making a Window ope Smaller..

    Hi all,

I have to replace two windows coming up..

Pretty much I have 2 windows that I can get but are a bit smaller.
The ope is 115mm wider and 140mm higher!

Is it major complications to make the ope smaller by this amount. I know I will run into trouble at cill level and at reveal.
My plan is to just make a little shutter the same depth of the frame and concrete it. Will water go through this?

Internally not so much a problem as it is being gutted back to the block and re boarded and plastered.

    Any ideas welcome..

The windows are ~€300 (good misfits) and cheap pvc one's €790 made to measure..

Btw,are you the fella doing the 2 storey insulation?!

3,2,1 back in the room again!

Not really a big job but if you can move the window sill/ledge it'd help.
Are the windows front or back of house? Old house etc?!

Anyway,If not then concrete blocks under window to bridge the gap and small concrete blocks-(same size as red bricks-any hardware has them) cut to fit space at side.

Got any pics? Oooooohhhhhh, this is like porn!!

Will get a pic up when i'm down at the house next!

I'm looking at an aluclad window. I'm wondering could I attach timber around the frame to make it fit. Pack it out as such..
The windows I have a secret frame if you know what i mean.. So an 'added frame' wont look weird, in my view!!

Only problem is thermal bridging of this extra frame, will it swell and squeeze the frame? Plan to preserve the wood, paint it same colour as window, attach with screws and a silicon seal..

    Would this work?

You wont see the 'added frame' from the inside as i will use an insulated backed plasterboard in the reveal.. Leaving the nice wood finish of the window.

    Hope all that makes sense

Only problem is thermal bridging of this extra frame, will it swell and squeeze the frame? Depends if the wood is preserved properly and not just a plank of ordinary deal with a lick of sadolins or ronseal as the weekend diy-ers swear by! Plan to preserve the wood, ("Prime" it properly) paint it same colour as window, attach with screws (use rustproof outdoor screws-posidrive or "spax" do them they're coloured green) and a silicon seal..There are types of window frame sealant that'll flex with wood in the coming years -silicone is not to be used here.[/I]

    Would this work?

    Cheers embracing life,

What sort of wood would you recommend for this? Will be preserving it, priming and painting it as you suggested..

not sure this is a good idea.

but the timber you are looking for need to be tanalised.
