    Hey guys,

I'm going to change my 79 D plates to ZV's this week. Never actually did this before so does anyone know what the procedure is? Do I just rock up to the VRO office with my old book?

    Thanks in advance!

Dunno either, but I'd bring along some ID too, just in case you have to jump all through the registration hoops.

And they will surely ask for some money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

I'm presuming and expecting 50 quid but was wondering has anyone actually done this and could tell me how it went!

I did it last September. Most of the staff dunno what to do. You need a special form VRT35, and then go to the office with you existing VLC & Registration Cert.

I couldnt find one on-line at the time, but phoned them up and waited a week for it but when I went up they wouldn't accept the photocopy and i had to fill one in all over again. the chap also told me that they have to do it manually and it takes about 20 minutes so try to pick a time they aren't too busy.........perhaps phone first !

    I don't mind if I get a 5 digit ZV once the first digit is '8'. Plate will be Z V8 1234! :D

Thats not too bad,and you will have an american machine too im guessing,so theres more scope for making it look authentic.
Where are you based, all the 8s are issued by Tipp south,Waterford City,Waterford county,Westmeath and Wicklow.

I'm Dublin but the Missus is from Mayo, wonder what the numbers are there? Could register it at her parents home. I believe there's still a bout 100 4 digit left in Dublin anyhow.

Mayo is ZV65701 to ZV68200,theres more than 100 four digits left, over 500 i think, though im open to correction here.

Just wondering whats wrong with 79 D reg to begin with. Personally I prefer year and county, makes the cars more intresting imo.

I supose the ZV reg`s give the car a more old school feel but in the sense of keeping your classic orignal if It came into ireland after 87 then an ZV plate is not really orignally for the car.

My brother has a collection of cars and is getting em all done with the same number. So he will have 88 D 123456 and 87 D 123456 and 88 WX 123456. Obiouslly not 123456 for the actual number but you get the idea.

He wouldn't be able to get a ZV anyway for those years.
Any car that qualifies to apply for one would never have been given a year plate either (at least not in that format).

Is he actually getting the same number after the year? How is he doing that???

Your bro likes his 80s jammers! What he got? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

The reason for the change is because the car is a '79 Trans Am but I am fitting a '77 nose cone to it (slightly different but more attractive). The '79 reg will 'tell the tale' of the job done while the ZV wont! Of course a pureist will probably recognise that it's not actually the '77 model but most wouldn't have a clue either way! Let's say it's just for me!

He is into the Blue Ovals....
He has 2 Xr3i`s an Xr2 and an RS turbo fiesta..
Actually one of his Xr3i is still on UK plates and I think it may be 86-87 so I think he may be able to get a AV for that one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

He wont be able to get a "ZV" until the car is 30+ years old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

Went to VRO Tallaght this morning. Didn't have the car on their system so wouldn't process it. They want a letter from my car club stating that the car is what I say it is and have to present the car itself for a 'visual inspection'!

Curiously that happens with Datsuns too,a friend has a 100A and a 120Y,both imported that are listed as Nissans on their registration certs. He asked could he change them to datsuns as thats what they are and apparently it weas a big complicated process.
My 100AFII,which is an irish car and namedas a Datsun on the brown tax book is listed as a Nissan on the tax disc, yet my 76 100A,which was registered last year here is called a Datsun.
I dont know why theres a difference!

Not trying to hijack the thread, but how would getting a ZV reg work, when the car is a UK import, registered in Carlow (XXCWXXX) but I live in Dublin? I know it goes according to where you PPS number is but...

    Thanks

I always thought it was based on where you register but I have since heard evidence to suggest it's actually based on the address you give at the time.

It IS down to where you currently lice, or tell them you live. If you have a Carlow reg but now live in Dublin, they will give you a Dublin "ZV" reg.

You'll get the number straight away but the VLC will take about 2 months to reach you !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

    Well finally got it sorted!

After two trips to the VRO, numerous phone calls and emails they called me this morning to give me my new number!

    Off to order plates now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,107 ✭✭✭hi5

The PPS number is to ward off Dealers who import ,register and sell without declaring the profits for tax purposes.
Which is why you see so many cars being sold on the UK regs.;)

Sorry for bringing back up this thread, but I will be applying for a new ZV plate.

Do I go into the motortax office and simply apply for one?

No, you go into a Revenue Vehicle Registration Office (VRO) and simply apply for one. ;) Bring along ID, PPS, V5C, credit/laser card. (and anything else I might have forgotten)

Thanks for that. Is it just my PPS number, as oppose to to proof of it? Also, what is the V5C cert? Is that the UK cert?

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,631 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Hmm, I don't have that cert. It's already on Irish plates..

The V5C is the green coloured cert that the DVLA send you.

The V5C is a number of colours and the seller should give it to you:

    v5c.jpg

    The front page is blue/green.
Section 1 - Registered Keeper (not necessarily the legal owner)
Section 2 - The Previous Registered Keeper
    Section 3 - Special Notes

The reverse of that has blue/green/red sections.
    Section 4 - Vehicle Details
    Section 5 - Registered Keeper
Section 6 - New Keeper of New Name/New Address Details
Section 7 - Changes to Current Vehicle
    Section 8 - Declaration

The opposite page has the tear-off slips:
    Section 9 - Notification of Sale/Transfer to the Motor Trade/Insurer/Dismantler yellow V5C/3
Section 10 - New Keeper Supplement green V5C/2
Section 11 - Notification of Permanent Export purple V5C/4
and a Selling Your Vehicle Privately note red strip which has blue strip on the reverse about Continous Registration Explained

In a normal UK sale sections 1-8 (front sheet) is returned to the DVLA and the new keeper gets the V5C/2 strip to use until the new V5C arrives.
In an export sale the current advice from DVLA form INS160 is for the seller to:
"You should fill in sections 6 and 10 with the new keeper’s name and address. Both you and the new keeper (buyer) must sign and date the declaration in section 8. Give the whole V5C to the new keeper to aid registration abroad.
You should then send a signed letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AG giving the vehicle’s registration number, the make and model of the vehicle, the date of sale or transfer, and the name and address of the new keeper."

If you are buying a car from the UK, make sure you do the paperwork properly and retain at least the front sheet with sections 1-8 on it. Draw the seller's attention to the procedure in the DVLA leaflet INS160 as they usually think they have to (wrongly) hang on to it and return it to the DVLA themselves.

    Sorry for wandering OT :o

You will need to complete form VT35, bring ID, PPS no, Log Book or VLC. If it's pre 1980 that should do it if it's 80 or more you have to wait until it's over 30 years old. I was expecting to pay an admin fee but they didn't charge me anything.

I just recently did the and the process took two visits to the VRO and numerous calls and emails until I got it done.

Do they have the VT35's in the offices?it is post 80, but it's early Jan 80, so the 30 years have passed.

How long were you in each time?

They should have them but if you PM me your email address I can send you a copy (which they may or may not accept)!

At least 90 mins in the office each time including waiting to be served.
