Laptops, brothers and stairs don't mix well

    Hi all

Last Wednesday my brother was going downstairs in my house and I gave him my laptop to bring down to my g.f. He decided that this would be the best time for him to experience what it's like falling downstairs. needless to say he didn't hold on to the laptop and now it won't recognise the drive.

I have a dell inspiron 1525, the hardrive is as follows: 160gb, 5400rpm (sata).

I went on the internet that night and bought a new dell mini 10.1 inch with the same specs as I am moving to Korea next week and wanted to have a small one to take with me so this worced my hand.

I am lucky enough that I had backed up all my photos and documents about 1 week before this happened so it's not too bad.

    Anyway, here are my questions.

    * I would imagine after taking such a bump that that the harddrive is beyond repair, would this be correct?

    * My g.f has the exact same laptop, would I harm her hard drive by removing it from her laptop and placing it in mine (warranty is not an issue as it's already run out) removing them is pretty easy to do too.

    * Could I possibly boot it from the software that came with the laptop with the hope that the hard-drive could start working again? I only have the cd with the drivers in my house as I gave my mate the windows cd, but my g.f should have all in her house.

    * Is there anything you could recommend me to do with the computer, like perhaps a place to get a cheap enough hard-drive to replace it?

(I would like to give the computer to my brother, yes he who broke it, so he could have a laptop to keep in contact with me when I am gone, as he currently only has a desktop. if he had mobile broadband he could skype me from my dads house so it would be handy)

Thanks for reading this far :)

Like you say, it sounds like the hd is gone. They're not the kind of thing you can repair, and since you have a backup of your data ayway, i'd forget about it. There should be no problem swapping out your gf's hd into your dell to see if it works.
Hard drives are cheap these days, you should be able to pick up a 320GB drive for 70ish.

Cheers, any ideas where I could pick one up on the cheap? I don't know if I should trust e-bay with this one, how would I know it's not a damaged one already?
