If the Republic were to annex a county in the North, Fermanagh first for example, what do you think would be the British response? I mean they see Northern Ireland as much as a headache as we do... so would they be bothered?? And also, the Americans would gladly sell the Republic state of the art military equipment, even in our economic mess most likely in spite of the UK, your views please!!? :D

The Brits would be glad to get the North headache off their hands to be honest. I think most know that, even the ageing die-hard protestants.
As for buying more weapons - jeasus we can hardly afford the 3 military boats we have already.
Buy more? I wonder what will they call the inventive named tax they could come up with for that!

**** me, not another N.Ireland/Brit thread. I'm from Fermanagh and I say leave it be. The Republic has enough problems at the moment.

Well considering that the Uk fund Ni to the tune of 9 billion a year I think it's a wet man's dream that we'll see 32 counties once again.

    We could start annexing counties...
    Or...

We could just go for whole countries..
Maybe somewhere warmer with less rain than Ireland.

We could do it really sly'ly as well..
Who would expect Ireland to invade them?

I vote Oz for our nations first conquest.
Theres loads of Irish already out there, they have beaches, lots of cheap booze and lets face it... Kangaroos are awesome.

All we need is to give some fella with a funny hat a stick and send him into the bush.
We tell him that millions of people worldwide will get pissed every year in his honour and BAM...
    No nore snakes.

Well, a lot of that 9 billion has to do with the size of NI as a country.

The simple answer is we can't afford N.I
It costs billions on the U.K's exchequer every year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

If we got the north it would cripple us.

They cant even support themselves ffs.

British taxpayer injects about £9bn a year there to keep it going.

A bloated public sector is the main reason for that but that in turn is due to a 30 year bombing campaign. Give it 10 years or so and I'd expect that figure to dramtically decrease as long as the private sector is encouraged to grow - i.e. cut spending in the public sector and use it in the private sector.

I wouldn't disagree with that, I'm just giving the reason for the funding. I think logistically, NI would work out cheaper for the south that it currently does for GB.

the uvf did have some kinda contingency plan for protecting the north in the 70s in the event of this happening, i remember reading about it around the time of the first wave of ceasefires. they were going to pull back from fermanagh and armagh, but not sure what the heads in london would've thought about it.

South Armagh is effectively in the Republic in all but border. Feckin' bandit country.

I'm agreeing with you! See my comments on the first page. As a Nordie, I think we should be in a position to be a viable option for the people in the south before we're thrust back upon them.

Well it's in the Brits interest to get rid of us, so if they know what's good for them, they'll help us to get back on track and then have a word in the ear of whoever is Taoiseach and say 'Here, take these ones off our hands' and if the Taoiseach is shrewd enough they'll reply 'OK, but only for 10 billion Euro' :D
