Is it idling OK? MAF problems on an auto will sometimes seem like autobox issues. Apart from that check the ATF quantity and colour and if they're ok change the ATF anyway :D

Start by changing the ATF & filter, see if that helps.

Had similar issues with a toyota before. Turned out I had a fluid leak from the transmission.

Check your fluid level. Low pressure will cause problems.

checked the atf and level was low so topped up with 1 l of atf still no major improvment cannot see any leaks on the drive car will swift 1 and 2 nd gear but 3 and 4th gears no go someone mentioned a torque convertor problem

Just pouring in more ATF won't make much of a difference. If the ATF level was low by at least 1L then there's definitely a slow leak somewhere.

Drain the box, replace the filter, then clean the pan and magnets and refill.

Some gearboxes go into a safe mode where they select 2nd or 3rd and don't change gear.

Dunno what the diagnostic system on those cars are, maybe input or output sensors, or as others have suggested the fluid may be knackered.

confab thanks for the tip but it draining the fluid and changing the filter a difficult job , i would be confident enough to take on a basic service but not sure if able to tackle transmission

was advised to call the auto gearbox specialist on clonliffe ave but would expect them to charge me a small forture not working at the moment and wife needs the car for her job

Try Naas Gearbox centre, It's not going to fix itself, and they may be able to do a diagnostic on it. Changing ATF properly is tricky and messy enough.
