I own a mazda 6 Oct 07. The front brake discs are after warping at 40,000 miles. Mazda are saying that it is normal wear and tear. Can anyone tell me if this is normal as my last car had 120,000 miles on the clock without changing the front discs?

Generally discs down't warp, the pads deposit material on the disc surface, creating variations in thickness. Have you been doing lots of hard stops or holding the brakes on when the discs are hot. What symptoms are you having?

I don't normally brake hard. The steering wobbles when the brakes are pressed even with a light pressing of brakes will cause this. I asked my local mechanic about it and he said that the discs were wrapped and it should be covered under warranty.

Generally no, they don't, but it certainly isn't unusual. I wouldn't have thought warranty would cover that, its wear and tear surely.

Unless you've been going from 120mph to 40mph entering every bend for the last year, then no - the disks should be fine. I'd push harder on the dealer, or contact Mazda Ireland. 40k miles is far too low for that to be happening.

Its very low and if you've been the only driver, you'll be well aware of the car's wear and tear.

I had to replace not just discs, but also calipers once, as I drove a car quite hard for a few weeks in city driving on worn pads. If you've done that at all, even for a week or two, you can warp discs very quickly when they're overheating.

In your case, as someone else has said, contact the mothership @ Mazda HQ. Plus do some digging on Parkers.co.Uk owners reviews, carsurvey.org and honestjohn.co.uk. You may find you're not alone but your dealers trying to brush you off. Or not...

I am the only person that drives the car. I don't brake hard only on the very rare occasion that I drive on a Mway, when I am overtaking and a car pulls out in front of me. The pads aren't worn either. I looked up mazda discs in google it seems that a lot of US owners have the same problem, some have discs wearing at 8,000 miles and didn't get any where with mazda. Thanks for the info, I will check out those websites. I priced the discs and pads for the front wheels at a mazda dealer and was quoted €220. I also checked them on micksgarage.ie and was quoted €60 incl postage. I don't know whether they are original mazda or not but then mazda discs don't last very long so maybe spurious ones would last longer.

If you get no satisfaction from the Dealer (likely) then good quality aftermarket discs like EBC or similar would be a good bet.
I wouldn't bother with drilled or grooved ones either just standard with new pads.

    Hi Sam, from http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=608

"One reader had a spate of problems in two and a half years:- new clutch (18,000miles). New rear tyres due to mis-alignment (20,000miles). Brake discs re-skimmed (23,000 miles: again seems to be a common problem), throttle body cleaned out due to a sticking butterfly valve (26,000miles)."

    http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/mazda/6/r79713/
"Brake discs warped at around 12000 miles. This snapped anti-rattle clips. Found it very difficult to convince dealer that there was a problem, although to be fair this was a Honda dealer who sourced this car from a Mazda dealer to be able to provide company car of my choice."

Best of luck. You're suffering a common problem and your dealer should play some ball.......

Interesting links. I owned a 05 mazda6 before this one for a year and changed to the 07 when someone crashed into the 05. I had a problem with rear shocks and springs and headlight bulbs blowing. I could handle the headlights as they are easy enough to replace. However I got no satisfaction from the dealer about the shocks. I bought the 07 when it was 3 months old (garage car). As mazda replace any parts that wear when less than a year old, I got the rear shocks replaced when the car was under a year old but the dealer decided that he wouldn't bother replacing the springs, so the new shocks are weak as a result. The 07 mazda also has the headlight bulb problem, I have spare bulbs in the car because when the outside bulbs blow it makes driving at night dangerous. If I don't get the discs done under warranty I will just buy standard discs and replace them myself or else get my local mechanic to change them as he is very reasonable.
