time not being kept by laptop clock

Have hp pavilion dv9399 and it is not keeping the time anymore.
It is barely 2 yrs old but is out of its one yr warranty. The time freezes when it is turned off. When laptop is running it will slow down and go backwards.
The internet clock used to update but that doesnt work anymore. The BIOS clock seems to be the same time.
Is it the CMOS battery? After only two yrs??
if i have a try at changing the battery is there anything that I could lose? settings etc?

Or is it something else altogether?

    Thanks in advance!!

my first thought was the cmos, have you checked if the date and time in the BIOS are correct?

+1 for CMOS battery being the likely culprit, but odd for a comparatively new machine. As a workaround, though, you could try a program called NetTime, maybe put a shortcut in the Startup folder

the bios clock is the same time as the pc clock. is there any point in trying to change the bios clock?

just some ther symptoms whether they are related or not?(?):
the ie7 opens up multiple windows sometimes and will only stop when shu down.
-could a faulty battery have any cause on why pressed keys dont type, its always been a prblem but today is especially bad.

but anyways if it is the cmos battery, where do i find one the ssame for not too much, i have seen battery from $30-$130 online.

also do i need to worry about losing any settings when battery is changed.
bios settings have not beenchanged by me if that counts.

    Thanks again for the advice!!

Just a follow up on that faulty bios clock...
i finally opened up the laptop following instructional video and removed battery. looked at it.cursed it for being something like $50 to buy becauseof the rubbersheath connector on it instead of €5 it cost in a jeweller, and then decided Id put it back in until i got around to buying one.Of course i adjusted time and date afterwards.

anyway 2 1/2 mths later and it still hasnt lost anytime, nor needed resetting.
so thanks to all sources for advice!
