Was originally looking at gettin g a 2002 Honda Civic import but have now decided that the Volkswagen Bora looks like a better option.

    See link........

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Bora/BORA-1.4/201006196882670/advert?channel=CARS

Looks liek a good deal to me

Does anybody have a Bora and what are they like on petrol to run.

As the mileage is 51,000 would the timing belts need to be changed out?

The 1.4 are known to have issues . Underpowered for that size of car..

    http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php

with the car being '04 the belts should have been changed ,

Don't buy a 1.4 very under powered an slow as sin, also a troublesome engine. If you must buy one go for a tl east a TDI still slow but not underpowered.

    +1

Avoid the 1.4 Bora at all costs. Engine and gearbox problems abound.

I just sold mine. Central locking problems are the norm rather than the exception, the engine is soft burning up to 1litre of oil every 1000k. VW say this is normal by the way.

Suspension is also soft and the car is massively, massively underpowered. My one used to get owned by the better half's 1.0 polo.

If you must get one get the 1.9 TDI or the 1.6 petrol. Much better.

    I wouldn't to be honest.

But if you do, I know the original owner of that car and they looked after it while they had it

Timing belt and Water Pump are due to be changed at 60,000 miles or every 4years whichever comes first, so I would think that it has been changed.Check before buying.

ok so Bora is not a good buy.

What about this VW 2004 1.6 Automatic Golf instead

Golf badge looks crooked on the back of it, check for repairs.

If you need the car for getting places and not racing around the local roads then Id say you could easilly find a diesel Bora with either 90 or 100ish horsepower.
I know someone with the TDredI (2002) Bora and she loves it.

I have the older 90 horse power engine and its by no means slow, not mad fast or slightly mad fast but it gets me from A to B very well.

yeah I just need a reliable car to get me from A to B for the next 3yrs or so.

It is just for use in Dublin only.....

Just city traffic or some motorway work too?

checked up on this vehicle, nothing wrong with it according to seller.

    was an exp-fleet management car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

well the seller is bound to be impartial

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭homer90

Seems pretty good value - the auto is perfect for Dublin !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭kravmaga

Well going to have a look at it tomorrow morning......

Seller has confirmed it will be fully NCT'd , fully serviced before sale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭kravmaga

The VW Golf was sold this morning by the seller at 10am..

But the car sounded to good to be true for that price......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

There was definitely something not right with the back end of it, ah well plenty more fish....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    How about this?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Corolla/1.4-LUNA/201006196882963/advert?channel=CARS

    1.4, 97bhp
Aircon, alloys, fogs, remote stereo, ABS, really reliable, no timing belt to worry about, well known dealer

    Hi Colm,

Yes I thought you were right the shape on the VW badge on boot looked strange.

I suspect you were right but the seller had 12 phone calls on the car and some punter paid up in cash this morning..... ah well

As you say more fish in the sea.... I am in no rush anyway.

The Toyota has 70k on the clock

I am looking for something with about 50k max and a budget of about 6k to spend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

70k is nothing on those cars, they take mileage very well. Certainly a lot less risky than a Golf with 50k.

I'm sure they'd discount that price for a straight deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭kravmaga

Cheers dude, okay will take that on board

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I picked that one cos it's high spec (for a Corolla) If you're not pushed on extras or would consider a saloon, there are some good deals on Carzone. Saloons generally are cheaper than hatchbacks (same as the Bora/Golf really)

Nice low mileage 05 Honda Civic saloon auto here which I'm sure could be bought close to budget, has a fresh NCT also:

    Other suggestions:-

    Mazda 3:

    Ford Focus:

great choices there bazz (except for the Focus)

(Irish) Automatic Corollas only available in base spec with 1.6 - that one is missing it's original wheel trims and got a new passenger side mirror which suggests it's an ex hire drive driven by Americans (probably Budget who hold on to Auto Corollas for years). In that case there won't be a service history or way to verify the mileage -

also crash repairs are a given (look at the shut line on the bonnet passenger side)

The rear bumper has been replaced too as the rear diffuser has been sprayed (they're supposed to be black)

add to that the dent on the wing, the mark on the passenger side sill and the bumper scuffs you get the impression it wasn't exactly looked after.

    TOP SPEC 1.6 AUTO
What they mean here is bottom spec auto.

Good choices there Bazz, food for thought, have to agree with Colm though on the Focus

The Civic looks a good buy at around the €6300 mark and they rarely give any trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That civic is probably the best suggestion so far.

Having a look at this tomorrow morning, its an import from Japan

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mitsubishi/Lancer/AUTO/201008197047448/advert?channel=CARS

Should I ask the usual questions ie

    Original auction sheet from Japan

    Does it have an Immobiliser

    ATF

Does it have an RDS radio/cd player

Condition of tyres as no alloys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

that sounds like a good checklist.
Tell them you want an NCT too

Car was sold before I even got to dealership.

This is the 2nd car I was going to look at on a Saturday morning that has been sold before I got to test drive.

So much for a recession, people still have money out there to spend....

Ah well hopefully I will be able to get to test drive this car next week...
