So I have been perfecting my mixing skills and trying to learn the basics and adapt a style of Dj'ing. The worst thing now is that I'm trying to build a cd collection and getting no where fast. I know there are loads of different styles of music and probably a million ways to sort a music collection, but have you any tips about the best way you find to firstly build a collection, and secondly to keep it all in order to make things easier?

Not sure on the technical side of making sure its in the correct order for DJ programs etc but the best way to find good music is to buy a few mix CDs. No doubt there'll be a few tracks on that you like, then go look up the artist. Some of the digital download sites will suggest "tunes you may like" based off the artists you're searching for. I've always found new music like that. Subscribe to a load of podcasts too.

Your record collection will build up a lot faster then you think.Your just gona have to put the time into finding new songs. This is what i generally do to find music.

Check beatport.com a few times a week to listin to new releases and look through the charts. They have every electronic genre you can think of and it will help you find the genres you like. They also have list of essesntial songs you need to hear from each genre. saves alot of time trolling the whole site.

When i come across a new artist i check out their myspace and then check out their "friends" list. Its a great way of finding new artists in a similar genre.

I also listin to loads of mixes to find new songs and artists. This is a great site for dj mixes. updates atleast one a week. http://generate2mix.livejournal.com/

As for organizing your CD collection, I'd say your best bet would be to do it all digitally. Put all your CDs on iTunes, and store them that way. Then you can burn tracks you want to play out onto blank CDs, instead of carrying around albums which only have one track you want to play.

    Is that allowed/legal?

I mean, if I buy an album, am I allowed to rip a single track and play it out(In a club or party)? Only asking as I haven't a clue myself.....

I've only just started djing myself so I don't have a big record collection but I've been listening to and buying dance music cd's for about 10 years. Obviously my collection would be greatly enhanced if I could use these........
