Crashed Mitsubishi

    Hi there,

I have a 1997 crashed Mitsubishi Colt I'm trying to get rid of. There's low impact damage to the front of the car...the bonnet is bent (won't open) and the bumper is pushed in. It has about 96k miles on it, but the lights aren't smashed (still working) and no apparent damage to the engine/radiator. The car still drives without overheating etc, has a set of alloy wheels on it and an (old) Kenwood cd player in it. What's the chances of getting anything for it? I tried phoning a scrapyard...they asked me loads of questions about it but when I named a price (about 400 quid - was only my starting price), they said they wouldn't have room for it at the moment.

Am I being optimistic trying to sell this, or should I just be giving it to a scrapyard and be thankful they're taking it off our hands?

With the government scrappage deals available, surely the car is worth something to somebody, even to scrap for a new car?

    Any opinions would be appreciated.

    Cheers...

You can't buy an old car to put through the scrappage scheme; there are some requirements on how long the car has to be registered to you and taxed and so on.

There are scrapyards that will take it, you will get a little money.
I tried selling my 2006 car which is grand except it needs an engine/turbo but for me private was the only way to go.

They will collect it too. Try Golden pages.

Sorry, I forgot to say, do you have any suggestions of where'd be the best place to go to sell this? Any good scrapyards? We tried cullencarparts but they said they don't have space for it...

    Hi Colm,

I think the NCT is current (up in July I think), but the tax has expired as far as I know.

might be interested in the alloys if u were willing to sell on, any damage done to them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Philip42

One of the alloys has a bit of a ding it after sliding into a kerb in the bad weather but to be honest I'd probably sell it as is rather than trying to sell it without wheels! Cheers anyway...

    Thanks Colm...I'll do that so...cheers....

no bother, i think u should get a **** set of wheels for it and sell the alloys to someone, you would probably get a bit more cash for it that way

That might be a good idea alright..

Still have it, and can't decide what to do...

Stick it up on www.adverts.ie for 300 or so. Cheap cars are usually snapped up from there. Make sure and put pics of the damage etc

Hi do you still have this car? I know someone that might be interested in buying it from you.

Where is the car based and is it driving?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Philip42

Alright there mate..sorry only saw your reply now..the car has been left so long in the underground car park without being driven the battery is gone flat! Also, one of the front tyres seems to have a slow puncture..the problem I have now is that the bonnet is wedged closed so no apparent way of jump starting it without opening the bonnet somehow..the car is driving still though..it just needs a jump start..
