I think it means that they're blind, and have a 'pilot' co cyclist on a tandem

Yes, Catherine Walsh won silver at the paralympic worlds last year with Caroline Ryan as her pilot. There are rules regarding the eligibility of pilots one being they have to have not competed at UCI level events in the previous year.

Why are people with disabilities disproportionately represented?

I'm not saying I am pro or con on this, just wondering what the reasoning is and how CI (or whomever) came up with the numbers.

Open to correction but I think our disabled cyclists are quite competitive internationally, relative to the able bodied ones, e.g. higher chance of medals from them.

The Irish Sports Council who give the grants view disabled sports as being on a par with able bodied sport.

At high performance level basically they view a Paralympic medal as equal to and Olympic medal.

Also be aware that able bodied athletes tend to have alot of other income streams from sponsorship etc which disabled athletes tend not to.

Edit. Blorg is quite right, our disabled cyclists compete internationally at an extremely high level.

Fair enough. Compared to the population, it is massively disproportionate. But there are some excellent reasons for this.

Another reason I can see is that it is of vital importance for people to have positive role models. I would imagine that this is even more important for disabled people.

OK, another question for those in the know.

Presumably Roche, Martin and Deignan are all on pretty good money at this stage given the teams they ride for. Do they really need to be financially supported like this?

No but they meet the criteria set down by the Sports council and are entitled to the grant.

IMO it would be much better spend on developing athletes.

That said Tommy Campbell wrote a piece tearing strips off the high performance team in CI for suggesting this....

The Donegal man is probably ours by rights, but what's to stop the other two deciding to be French and English if we decided to cut their stipend? /cynicism

its very easy actually ,all paralympic cyclist must be ranked inside the top 10 world rankings , and thats just for the international . The reason for the numbers is there are no great amount of cyclist racing domestically in the cuntry with a disability , so therefore there is no real development coming thru either .

This is the chance you have been waiting for

Get paid to get some world class training, and all you have to ask yourself is ....

Craig MacLean is aiming to be an able-bodied tandem pilot for GB in the 2012 London para-Olympics. According to his wiki page there is a mandatory 2 year waiting period of non-international competition before he can compete

Apologies for the crude joking but anyway :

Brian Griffin [looking at Glenn's Winnebago]: "Quagmire's Cross-C**try Tour." Uh, isn't there an "o" in "country"?
    Glenn Quagmire: Nope!

All joking aside, I think this funding is well proportioned between those that need it to compete due to lack of sponsorship etc but possibly have less outlay, and those that deserve it because they are cycling at the top level internationally and do have a higher outlay. I am presuming that in neither case will it cover all the costs involved so like everything, it is up to the individual to prioritise where it goes.

Anyone else think the carding is a bit off-skew in that David McCann - a rider in the autumn of his career (granted he got a relatively ok place in the worlds TT's last year) - got 20k.

Philip Lavery - an up an coming rider in the Spring of his career - got nothing!?
