Hi dude, just yesterday I updated my 2g Iphone (If yours has a silver back I believe it is a 2g too) from firmware 2.2 all the way to 3.1.3.
I fully jailbreaked and unlocked it. I used this tutorial:
    http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-os-3.1.3-firmware-with-redsn0w-0.9.3-9140421/

Just be careful that your modem/baseband firmware is below 04.26 I believe.
Mine for instance was 04.05.04_G and still is the same.

Funny that you should mention this... I too wanted to upgrade my 2G to 3.1

Check out iClarified site as I used the tutorial there to update to 3.1.2
Its a pretty good site with loads of other Apple product workarounds

    IMPORTANT
Read everything a few times to make sure you understand exactly what you are doing.

Ever since I updated, the battery life issue is sooooo much better and seems a bit faster too.

    Good luck
