worried about tooth decay

I'm currently worried about the rate of decay of my teeth and wondering if anyone can help.

My front top teeth in particular are uneven along the bottom - where they first come into contact with food.

While flossing and brushing the other night, this area of the teeth seemed as if it was almost melting away when I felt it with my fingernail.

I went through periods in my teens when I drank alot of Coke and didn't look after my teeth all that well. Now I try to look after them, but just recently my mouth often feels dry and particularly after lunch and having not eaten anything particularly bad for my teeth my mouth doesn't feel right and I worry that my teeth are literally wasting away.

If anyone has some advice - apart from the obvious of telling my dentist who I'm due to see soon - I'd be grateful.

It could be acid erosion. You mentioned you drank a lot of coke in your teens. Coke and acidic (juices) drinks soften tooth enamel which causes the enamel to wear away. It's also caused when heartburn (acid in your stomach) makes its way up to your mouth. Check in the mirror and see if the bottom of your teeth are see through.

yep I think that's probably it.

Maybe I should consider reinforcing them with either veneers or composites...?

I'd say it would depend on how bad your teeth are and how much you can afford. I think veneers are pretty pricey.

    Hi

sorry to hear about troubles with choppers. Avoid acidy drinks: all carbonated drinks, juices, diluted drinks are acidic. Most booze is aswell unfortunately

Use fluoride toothpastes and rinses. You mentioned you wear due a dental visit soon so discuss this when you go. There are sealants or coatings that can be placed on the teeth to help protec them. Veneers or composites only for severe wear or damage but would be expensive.
