hi all, my laptop works fine for most stuff.

    its a dell stdio 17.
    running vista.
when converting a file using Divx Convertor the machine shuts down after 5 or 10 minutes.

i upgraded to windows 7 and hoped the peoblem would resolve but to no avail. i have 2gb of memory installed and its a clean install of windows 7. the fan begins to get louder before the system shuts down..

    any suggestions?

Could be thermal shutdown (laptop shuts down because some component(s) is running too hot).

Download HWMonitor and watch it while you run the convertor. What kind of temps are we talking about ? Generally anything over 80C is hotter than you'd want, and if anything is going above 100C then you're probably looking at a thermal shutdown.

Of course, it could just be a regular crash, bad software or something. But run HWMonitor and report back.

thank you for your reply, the cpu usage in task manager is running around 80% after ten minutes or so of divx convertor running the machine shuts down, i have attached a hwmonitor screen grab...

had this problem with my laptop running certain programmes, the laptop would heat up to the point where it would shut down.you can buy a cooling fan for your laptop for 30 euro in any PC shop.worth the buy as i havent had the problem since.

    Look at those temps!

It's shutting down itself to prevent damage from overheating. I suggest going into BIOS and tell the fan to spin faster. Maybe your fan is broke? You might need a new one.

Yeah, the screengrab of HWMonitor confirms that its shutting down from overheating. Something seriously wrong, like maybe the fan is broken, or the heatsink isn't attatched properly, or perhaps the vents or radiator fins are clogged up with dust/debris.

If you are under warranty, I would get Dell to fix it.

If not, the next thing I would do is make sure the system is clear of dust. Which in some cases involves taking off some panels on the bottom, using canned air to blow dust out etc.

    thanks to all,
i was all fired up this morning after reading the posts. i had previously reported system shut down errors to dell and they replaced some parts but i contacted them again to day and said that although the machine was no longer under warranty the previous problem still exists.

they past me along a few times.

i mentioned how that the cpu was reaching 92 degrees cel. and that it was gonna cause a fire in the house. and they agreed to fix the machine again for free.

but for peace of mind i went for extended warranty of 149euros for three years which i though was pretty good. and i may get a new laptop in a year or so out of it.

    thanks to all.

technician is coming out tomorrow to replace fan and heat sink.
