    Hi

I got this from a friend however I don't have the original recovery disk but I understand that there should a recovery partition on it (it is windows xp media center edition 2005) - can be accessed by crtl and F11 - I want to go back to the start and reinstall everything, do all the updates and then make an image of the system to a CD.

I want to upgrade the memory from 512mb to 2gb and put in a new 320gb harddrive.

Once I have this done do I just install the CD with the image and then run the installation of the OS? I believe I'll have to create a few partitions as there a limit of 137gb, will I be able to do this at the start or will have to use some partition software to do this afterwards?

I think that's everything but if I've missed anything suggestions would be great.

Your plans for an upgrade sound grand. Both the 320Gb drive and the 2GB Ram should work fine.
Are you sure that it has a recovery partition? I have a Dell 6400, that originally came with media centre 2005 and it didn't have one.

I found this in the manual

Using Dell PC Restore by Symantec
NOTE: Dell PC Restore is available only on computers purchased in certain regions.
Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC Restore
restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. Any programs or
files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently deleted from the hard
drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on.
If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore.
NOTICE: Using PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications or drivers
installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using PC Restore.
    To use PC Restore:
    1 Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish restarting, and then restart the
    computer again.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
    74 Solving Problems
    6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that
appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the
    computer was turned on.
    7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Do I need this product or similar to change from a 60gb harddrive to a 320gb one?

    http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=124793

Or can I just create a clone of the current system, uninstall the old hhd, install the new one and put the clone on the new hdd, although I'm not sure how the last bit is done?
