Audio artifacts when playing music - MSI CR610

Hey there, picked up a new laptop today. Spec is here. My model is the highest spec one available in that model (4gb ram, 500gb hd, blue-ray drive etc, windows 7 home premium).

Spent four or five hours setting everything up the way I wanted, set up my development environment etc and then tried to play a mp3 through iTunes. I immediately noticed artifacts in the sound. These present themselves as 'rattles' and momentary skips in the track.

I did a bit of experimenting, this occurs when any extended (more than a few seconds) audio is playing and the effect is highlighted on parts of the track that are heavy on the bass (but noticeable at other times too). This issue occurs when audio is coming from the built in speakers, headphones (via normal audio jack) and when using external speakers (entry level dell ones).

I have tried removing and reinstalling the realtek audio drivers with no joy and at the moment I am in the middle of restoring the device to factory settings.

I am leaning towards a hardware fault at the minute.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with this laptop? Has anyone got alternate suggestions? (I have tried the mp3 files on both my iphone and on my main machine (running ubuntu 9.10) and the dvds on my main machine and regular DVD player, so I know it's not them)
