External Nap Plastering

I was just going over my external finish and it appears very rough. If you were to run your hand over sections you would graze your hand very easily. Should a nap plastering finish be this rough?

Is there any way to smoothen the nap?

Well don't scrape your hands against it! ;)

When I had my walls done, they were also rough like that, I think it softens when you paint it - as in the paint covers the sharp edges of the sand.

I haven't painted yet as I have used white sand/cement, but will eventually have to paint it!

A good Nap is pretty peaky. Some plasterers dont do it very well and the nap barely shows.
If you dont like that, you should have specified a different finsh

I just want to make sure it's done right, it's very rough in spots and very smooth in other spots. So not really sure what to make of it.

I would say that it should have the same roughness all over, like the heaviest grade of sandpaper!

A proper nap will have large peaks. Much larger & rougher than sandpaper. It should be uniform though without doubt.

Yes, it's just the way I described it. I should have said like artex! :o
