My friend is looking for a laptop

    Hello folks,

Sorry if I'm in the wrong spot to ask this question, or if I'm giving people these    emotions by asking it! It's not my intention to upset anyone as I'm not too used to this particular forum, patience is much appreciated :)

Basically my friend is asking me what laptop he should buy for family use. They want a laptop as his girlfriend will be taking it to her mothers house too. There are three kids in the house from 4 to 16 (I'd have reccomended a desktop only for them wanting it portable).

They don't want it for games, kids have Wii etc. He tells me they want it for looking up stuff online for the kids homework, general interest surfing, probably order a thing or three online and so forth.

I have a Dell laptop myself and to be honest it's not give me much trouble at all over the four+ years I've had it. I looked on their site and they seem to have decent "Popular laptop deals", but, in fairness it's been a long while since I've looked for a laptop for myself.

He said his budget is 550, absolute maximum 600 Euro.

I think they'd be happy with a laptop that performs well online. I don't see them needing anything like a high end gamer would.

Suggestions and advice would be appreciated :)

He was asking me to reccommend a reliable shop to deal with in Galway. I think he'd be better off buying direct from Dell myself, but if someone knows better then please advise. Particularly what machines and brands to stay clear of. My girlfriend has an Acer and if it were mine I'd have shot it years ago

    ATVB,

    John

I ordered the following laptop here for a family member last week from Amazon.co.uk.

It is a Samsung R519 and it's 347 sterling and with the conversion and that it came to 420 in euro's, this is including free shipping which I ordered on a Monday night and it arrived on that Thursday.

When purchasing it, I had pretty much the same requirements as you are asking, and on inspecting the laptop, it is really a good buy.

Samsung are throwing out some good quality gear at the moment, I bought a N140 Net-book for college there over the xmas and also one off their monitors also, and I am really happy with them.

It is listed as no 3 in the Independents top 10 Budget Laptop.

So, again, I would highly recommend it.
