    From rte.ie:
NUIG & UL to form alliance
    Monday, 15 February 2010 22:22
Two universities in the west are preparing to form what is being described a new 'strategic alliance'.

The alliance will see National University of Ireland Galway and the University of Limerick coming together to pool resources and develop a combined strategy for the delivery of third-level education in the west and mid-west.

It comes one month after the Government's decision to dissolve the NUI.

The new partnership between the two universities will be the first of its kind in the country.

NUIG has a student population 16,000 and 2,200 staff and the University of Limerick has 11,000 students and a staff of 1,300.

Academics say they hope the funds will be there to create centres of world class excellence.

The formal launch of the new strategic alliance will take place in Dublin on Thursday.

The event will be attended by Taoiseach Brian Cowen, Tánaiste Mary Coughlan and Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe as well as the presidents of both universities.

They will outline how exactly the alliance will work and the significance they believe it will play in the provision of third-level education on the west coast in the years ahead.

What impact will this have on education and/or funding for the college? Surely it's not good news?

'Alliance' and 'Strategic Alliance'; you'd swear they were building up for a wartime strategy!

Time to start stocking up on guns n ammo!
Dont think it really means a lot for us. Maybe a few less students rom the west will decide to come to Cork, but other than that I cant see how it would impact on us that much.

Same, struggling to find any implications in it for us. Perhaps if the two campus' linking would mean more funding being pumped in. I think we'll be fine but am open to correction.

With one staff member for every 7.28 students in NUIG I'm not surprised they're trying to mooch some of UL's funding.

They must have staff wiping bums and spraying deodorant in NUIG to justify those employee numbers.

that's not academic staff numbers actually..its the total of all employees in every aspect of the institution's work. UCC has over 2,800 such employees.

It's not all that unusual. Didn't TCD and UCD do similar recently?

It's a good idea for both universities. With the amount of joint research proposals at the moment, it's crazy not to go in with other research groups.

And while the pot of money for research is dwindling at a scary rate, I don't think the alliance will really make them more able than researchers in UCC to get the funding.

Aren't there some courses done jointly by CIT & UCC, not many but a few?

I don't think it will make much difference to UCC tbh, but the full impact won't be seen for a while

    UCC wants cleaners.CIT provides cleaners.

    Perfect sinergy
