    hi
it looks like the timing belt on my toyota avensis (1999) has slipped (car cut out on me last week, wasnt able to start it since),
ive got a quote to get it repaired, thats comming in around €700...

im wondering what peoples opinion would be? would you bother getting it fixed or would you look for a diffrent car.

There is currently 150000 miles on the clock, but the car has never giving me any issue

    Thanks...

99 means you probably have nct till 11 ?

seems dear for the belt and pullys/pump have the valves crashed off the piston or something
if its just the belt its worth dooing i've put 300,000 miles on one of those before selling it on

I'd say it's 50/50 whether it's worth it, if she has good tyres and shocks and doesn't look like anything else repairwise is on the horizon I would go for it, otherwise pick up something else.

If it is otherwise in good condition and doesn't need any other big spending coming up, it might be worth it. Especially if you "know" the car.

That said, there's the practice of bangernomics. Scrap the car, buy another similar car with long NCT for around a grand and drive it until it needs major money spending. Then scrap it, buy another...

check out cars for sale for €1k.
    Then make your comparison.
I would doubt you would put it back on the road after you test drive a few cars with 2 years NCT for a grand. You will be suprised whats out there.

"TOYOTA - the best built cars in the world"

...but seriously, I'd get it repaired provided the general condition of the car is good. It should last another while yet.
Trying to find a replacement for €1k and you are asking for trouble.

Who diagnosed that it has "slipped"? If anything the belt has broken. When was the timing belt changes and was the tensioner changed at the same time. Should have been done every 60K miles. If it wasnt done for 90K then quite likely it could be broken.

As for the repair, these cars are relatively bullet proof, IF looked after. If you think that this repair will give you a car for a few years then you should probably have it repaired.

thanks for the suggestions guys, ive now got it towed to the mechanic who i bought the car off at home, (he would have been servicing it for the last few years) (its a pity that the breakdown service on offer is only to a local garage, its not much use to you if you break down 100km from your own mechanic:rolleyes:)

so i should have an update in a day or two, will let ye know as soon as i do.

the car is in good condition, and i had got new tyres the friday before...and in fairness to it, it never gave me any bother,.....hopefully it will be back on the road, its my 1st car (kinda missing it...:p)

timing belt snapped on my astra few years ago! bent twelve valves quite badly! got the head re-built for 300 euro and re-built the engine then myself had the car back on the road for 450 euro! if the belt slipped 700 is a rip off! new belt kit would be 200 euro max plus labour!

They couldnt depend on the accelerator,
They couldnt depend on the brakes.
Best not allow it move at all. Safety first in fairness
