I have Fedora 11 64 bit installed on my Acer Aspire 5542 and I can't play any sound through my headphones, it continues to come through the speakers. I have to say, it's driving me insane!

    Here's a screenshot, any ideas?

Looks like your headphones volume is 0.

Don't think so, I can't turn it up. I tried messing around with it but couldn't change that one at all!

The master volume is also muted.

Mine looks more or less like this:

Install aumix, see if it can allow you to unmute the headphone jack.

Sorry, that wasn't the issue. I have it on mute because I'm in a computer suite! Here you go.

Installed that, not quite sure how to use it.

    If I try: aumix
I get back: aumix: error opening mixer

Not a very helpful error message. Is there a switch anywhere, to switch on headphones? Are you using Gnome? What does the sound preferences panel look like?

A switch on the laptop? No, headphones work fine in Windows too.

Yeah, I'm using GNOME. Attached two pics to the sound preferences panel, not sure if they're what you're looking for!

Not an external physical switch, it's just that I saw this, and thought you might see a switch somewhere on alsamixer or your sound preferences dialog box.

What happens if you try the HDA device for output?

Had a look there, didn't seem to help. Headphones are ticked as in screenshot!

Must play sound through the HD port because I get not sound at all.

You need to set the "headphone jack sense" or similarly named button. Had this problem myself before. I'll try to dig out the exact name.

edit: Yeah, this post details what I did before. I don't have that switch here because it's not a laptop that I'm on at the moment.

I'll give that a go and let you know how I get on, thanks.

There should be "headphone jack sense" in alsamixer that you can mute/unmute.

Maybe try pressing F6 in alsamixer to select a different soundcard, and make sure it's on the right one.
Try running alsaconf as root. It should setect and set up your soundcard if it's not set up properly already.
Sorry if already said, I'm very sleepy.
