Macbook w/slower internet speeds

Hey, I have a 1.5 year old macbook, running leopard. It's the basic model. My issue is with my download speeds. Recently we have been having problems with our 30MB line on UPC, which a lot of people have been having (slow speeds). Therefore I have been testing our download speeds alot on speedtest.net. I have noticed that my macbook gets download speeds ALOT slower on the macbook. There are 4 laptops in the house. 3 HP's and 1 macbook. Right now the macbooks are getting 15MB~ down and 2mb up whereas the macbook gets 6MB down and 2MB up. I don't understand why this is happening really, I've tried googling the problem but I'm finding it hard to find something directly related to this.

how is your macbook connecting to the network? If its connected via ethernet, try one of the other machines on that connection in case its a dodgy cable. If its wireless, make sure you have a decent connection. I know that in windows you can match the card settings with your switch settings to ensure a proper connection (sometimes mismatched settings disconnects the network on windows - dont think its an issue on the macs)

Also, test on different speed test servers with different browsers.

It's connecting via wireless, and I have tested both computers with them beside eachother at the same time. We had to do a factory restore on the router yesterday so I don't think the any special settings are set. I have tried on firefox, chrome and safari getting similar results on each one.

To add a little complexity to this. UPC says we went over our 250gb download limit last month. There is no way any of us downloaded that much, also 30gb was uploaded. Our connected is password protected (we have changed passwords etc since) but I'm wondering if a trojan could be involved with all of this? And what are some good virus/trojan/malware checkers for the mac (free hopefully)

I dont know of any malware checkers, but if you download little snitch, it shows you everything that is accessing the internet from your computer, which might help a little
