Seeing as I'm still on hold to revenue for the past 15 minutes, thought I'd put my questions here to see if they'll be answered...

    1. Can I register for VAT without registering a business name?

    2. Question 16 on TR1: When did the business or activity commence? My business hasn't started yet, as I want to get a VAT number before buying startup equipment. What do I enter here? Intended start date?

    3. Question 17 on TR1: To what date will annual accounts be made up? Is this the date I choose to have my tax returns filed? Should this be a year from when I intend to start business?

    Thanks.

    1. Yes
    2. Intended start date is fine. BTW, registration is effective from the beginning of the NEXT VAT period after the date on which the application is received.
    3. Yes - the date you choose to have your tax returns filed. This generally must be less than or equal to 12 months from the intended start date.

    Best of luck.

#3 addendum, I would probably recommend choosing a date like 31/12/10. Especially if you are starting trade this year. That way, when you file your first taxes, it will be when the rest of the country is. *you won't be required to file until year two, where you can file for for first full year, and your partial year at the same time.* full records must be kept throughout.
