18 years old - need to find work

    Hey guys,

    Here's the thing.

I finished school last June and have been self employed (registered with Revenue etc...) since then, writing for various websites etc.... to get by and have a bit of $$$.

But work has been rapidly drying up since. Plus it very frustrating having to constantly search for work etc and manage clients at my age. I'd like to just have a normal job.

Perhaps even part-time would suit me so I could do both.

I'm on a gap year between college and secondary school. Kind of regretting this as when I have no work, I'm bored out of my mind.

Anyone have any suggestions for finding work at my age? Right now I'm finding the job sites etc... to be an utter dead end. Have been trying for months. Every job which I'm qualified for (shops, cafés etc....) must be getting thousands of applications from people all over the county desperate for work which is understandable in this economic climate.

Got any tips? Anyone know of areas which hire people with leaving certs, but not many apply to??

    Thanks,
    Dean

Ps. Sorry if I'm asking the unanswerable here!

Also, just in case anybody is wondering, I do have expenses like Rent etc... (to my mam and dad) so I still need a job. Being able to flake around isn't an option.:o

You may not like this mate but i saw an internship available for a web designer? would give you valuable industy experience before you hit college. Unfortunately, its not a paid position but the experience would probably be really helpful and you'd be in a better position to look for a job

Will try and dig up the link for you, it was on jobs.ie

    Hey,

That would be great. To be honest, half the reason I want to get a real job is to work with other people. I could probably still freelance on the side so an internship would be cool.

However, I always assumed that internships were for people AFTER college to get a bit of experience in a field. Not the other way around. Do you think they'd accept somebody with just an LC (I do have SOME experience in web design from doing my own websites).

    Thanks,
    Dean

Not being funny, but would they not waive the "rent" until you find employment.

They wouldn't expect me to hand up money if I didn't have a job. That would be madness.

But I'm self employed atm and can pay the rent plus have $$$ for myself. My main reason for wanting to get a normal job is to get experience and relieve the stresses of being self employed. It's a bitch.

    Anyone any tips??
    :o

    Try this.

    1: https://www.revenue.ie/selfservice/enterRegistrationDetails.faces

Enter your details, they send you a pin.. Insert the rent you pay your parents.. You should get a few quid back.

2: Buy a ladder, and window cleaning gear. Practice on your parents house (they'll be happy)

3: Charge your neighbours €15 per house, they'll love it.. Expand when you get the hang of it. Maybe include a buddy in the business plan to hold the ladder.

    Just a thought... :pac:
