Quick passport question for newlyweds! ; )

Myself and the fiance are getting married end of May, and honeymoon start of June.

Her passport runs out next month, so she has to get a new one.

But she's changing her surname to mine when we marry, so what happens regarding the passport?

Is it a 10 year passport with her maiden name, or is there some way of a quick changeover?

    Thanks:)

    Exchanging a passport
It is no longer possible to obtain a replacement passport (e.g. if your passport has been damaged or if you have married and want to change the name on your passport). Instead, you will have to apply for a new one.

So she gets it in her maiden name and keeps it for 10 years bring marriage cert with her if flights etc booked in married name (easier just to book in maiden name) or pays for a replacement one.

    Thanks V1llianous, from the fiance:)

Althought I'd hoped it wasn't that answer. So maiden name for nearly 10 years so rather than pay the xtra money.

If she gets a passport in her maiden name, you might be posting questions here in a couple of years' time about what you should do about airline tickets booked in the wrong name!

I wondered if she might apply for a passport in her future married name, but it seems that is not allowed:
If you are applying for a passport in a name other than that on your birth certificate or marriage certificate you must produce evidence that you have changed your name or that you are commonly known by that name.

It seems that you are unlucky with the timing, but if that is all that goes wrong, it won't be too bad.

If the passport got lost over the next year or so then I presume if you were to replace it the new passport would be in the married name - thats only if the passport got lost though.

You can just get a replacement one with the married name when you get back. You DON'T have to keep the old one for the full term.

I see what ye mean, but won't you still have to pay the €87 fee to get the new one then? Cos that would mean €87 next month, then another €87 in July.......

Bearing in mind the whole thing with a logbook from a car, you simply send away the logbook with your new name on the form, and it's sent back to you with your details updated.

    Yes.
€80.00 for 32 page, €110 for 48 page. Plus the appropiate postage fees.

(you could wait 'til your partner is over-65 before marrying them, then the price would be Free).

There used be a renewal service (€18.00 in 2003) but that option/service is no longer available.

A letter from a registar or the priest which is going to marry you stating that you intend to marry and that you have given your three months notification to marry should suffice in order to have the passport issued in her future married surname. I am 99.9% certain of this but you should ring and check just in case!

FYI - Having a passport in your maiden name and booking flights in your married name will not work even if you produce your marraige certificate at the airport/border control/immigration.

    Congrats and good luck.
