Cutting a tightbore barrel

Hi lads, I have a tightbore barrel for M16 and I want to cut it to shorten the lenght to the same lenght as the one that came with my AEG. My question is, is there gonna be an issue that can arise if i cut the tightbore barrel? and would a hack saw do the job in cutting it? thanks

There's a piece in this month's AI that involves cutting a barrel. They used a pipe cutter (I wouldn't use a hacksaw), then a counter-sink drill bit before cleaning up the birr with a sharp craft knife.

I was looking at that yesterday, they clamped it into a vice without a softjaw.. lol., defo don't do that.

Unless you have the right tools (or access to them) it's going to be difficult to get a clean finish on the cut edge. It's probably quicker and simpler to buy a barrel from ehobby.

Use a rotary too (dremel) with a cutting head to chop it down.
Use a countersink or a grinding tool on the dremel to create a crown .

as for clamping it, just be very, very carefull.
I've cut barrells down before and theyve always worked fawlessly

I have done this in a metal working shop with the proper kit, its not worth it, accuracy was crap after.

If you try it use a proper pipe cutter, use very small increments on the tensioner or you will compress the inside of the barrel.

I wouldnt touch the crown with a dremel, id sooner buy another barrel than hack it up to try and save a few quid.

I've used a dremel before to cut a barrel, you just need to deburr the edge at the end, I wouldn't use a dremel to crown it, using a deburrer or large phillips head screwdriver by hand can take off any stray brass.

I imagine its easier to get a new tightbore by vanaras or a similar cheap company, I only did this on a 6.08 barrel and wasn't concerned about great accuracy.

Echoing what the lads said below; unless you have the right tools for the job don't risk it. Instead:
1. sell it and by a shorter one
2. buy a silencer to cover the extra bit
