Hi i'm hoping someone can advise me on the following:

I've been currently working in my job for 16 months (government organistion). It began as a part-time position but I was asked to stay on as the work was there for me. The money stayed the same however, minimum wage. To this day I have not signed a contract. I have been told on numerous occassions during this time that i will recieve a contract and to basically 'hang in there'. As it stands, i do like my job but hate being messed around like this. Is it legal to withhold a contract like this after 16 months of work?

Certainly is and especially with a government agency. On the upside, with no formal contract at this stage (16 months) it would appear you have gained full time employment by default. Every employee is legally entitled to a formal and written contract regardless of the position. You mentioned minimum wage and this surprised me as i figured government agencies would be paying a little above the odds. I know your concerned about rocking the boat, so if you can trust someone a little senior than you, make some discrete inquiries. But if you say you have been employed on a full time basis for quite some time, seems to me the employer is now at a disadvantage if they attempted to let you go. I doubt inquiring about your position would lead to any negativity but your line boss has messed up here as they are in very clear breach of legislation.
