    Hey,

Got my iPhone from IOS a while ago and see a lot of ppl talkin up Jailbreaking. I understand what it allows (the ability to add non-apple apps to the iPhone) but apart from custom themes, what other kind of features\apps\things can you put on that would be worth going through this hassle??

    Cheers for any replies..

    :D

It basically allows you to open the whole thing up to be a (pretty much) fully customisable media device.

It's hard to describe really. There are simple thing you can do, like change the screen layout to have 5x5 icons instead of 4x4 icons, add an extra icon to the bottom bar. Then you can really personalise it, like renaming the carrier name to whatever you want, change "slide to unlock" to say whatever, etc.
Only today (a bit slow I know) I downloaded and ran a little script program from Cydia, that disabled the stupid "call forwarding active" notification whenever a call is made. That drove me spare, that did!
It's not as much of an issue now, but up until recently, the only way you could MMS on the 3G was a cydia app. I think it's still the only way you can record video.
    *snip*

So really, I'd say give it a go. If you don't like it, you can always restore to factory defaults.

i use backgrounder, it allows multitasking not possible otherwise, widgets for your lock screen, can be used to display a wealth of customisable info, rss, weather, facebook stuff, the list is endless
awesome themes around out there as you say, JB just gives you the ability to have YOUR iphone the way YOU want it, be it 5/6 icon springboard or dock, rename apps, you'll be surprised at the amount of customisation you do, there is the piracy aspect of it, but its not everyone's cup of tea, i like the JB cos i like to have the iphone i spent my hard earned money to be what i want it to be, and not have to be apple's lapdog
    :D good luck

    Thanks for the info guys..

Some more questions if you'll indulge me...
    1. I read that if you jailbreak your iPhone, you can't go to the Apple Store\Apps Store? Is this true?
    2. Are all the non-approved jailbreak apps free to download?
    3. Also, I am on v3.1.2. Is it possible to jailbreak this version?
    4. and is it true that once I jailbreak I can't update the phone's software anymore?

yes you can go into apple store no problem, although the hackers behind latest 3.1.3 hack were banned from app store yesterday, the ordinary jb'er is fine
no not all non apple apps are free, devs like to sell there products also, alot can be got free if you know where to look
yes you can jb with blackra1n its called
no not true, but it takes time for the hackers to catch up,stay on 3.1.2, for the moment the latest update is not safe (yet)
and if you do JB when cydia loads, be sure to hit the MAKE MY LIFE EASIER button, do this once and you will always be able downgrade to 3.1.2 and re-jailbreak

ok, I'm gonna do it! Later on when I get home I'm gonna jailbreak..

will I lose all my music\videos\texts\photos etc when I do this??

and if I dont like it I can definietly go back to original factory settings without issue??

    no you wont lose anything,
be sure to be connected to wifi when jailbreaking, it only takes 20 seconds and a reboot to jailbreak, piece of cake
you can restore to apple stock anytime by pressing restore in itunes, ignore all requests for you to update your software, there is nothing to gain, it kills jailbreak, you can accept o2 carrier update,
but if you want to restore to your current 3.1.2 you must click the MAKE MY LIFE EASIER button in cydia after you install it via blackrain app that appears after you jb

Just be careful that you read the instructions with blackra1n carefully.

What I'm mainly referring to is the fact that you may have to "make it ra1n" twice (you'll know when you see it).

If you get stuck on that screen with the picture of the ipod cable and iTunes don't despair, just close itunes and rerun blackra1n.

Also, be patient with it - it can take a while...

Here's a list of the Jailbreak Apps I recommend most, along with a brief description of their functionalities.

I'd like to encourage everyone else to add their own favourites to the list - would be nice to see what other people are using.

    Action Menu
Allows you to add a list of favourites to the copy/paste bar. Very handy for remembering logins and passwords while browsing.

    AptBackup
Makes a list of your Cydia apps and will redownload them for you in the event that you have to do a restore in iTunes

    BossPrefs
A replacement for your settings menu, easier to use and with more options.

    Categories
Great app, allows you to create folders to keep your apps in. A word of caution - moving your "Mail" icon into a folder will mess with your ability to save bookmarks in Safari for some reason.

    Five Icon Dock
Does what it says - I love it.

    MultiIconMover
Allows you to move multiple icons between app screens at one. Handy, especially if you don't use Categories

    Winterboard
    For adding custom themes

Probably time this was bumped since the new JB has been released...

I'll add another 2 apps that are not mentioned:

    Bitesms
Overrides the messages app with excellent functionality plus you can also use it to send txts over their network (all txts are ~7c with them), saves a fortune on international txts :)

    Lockinfo
Worth jailbreaking for this app alone. Just hit the power button and you have all your notifications, weather, mail, sms and calendar available on the lock screen. This means that you never miss a notification and you don't have to go all the way into the calendar app to see what your schedule is for the rest of the day :)

Why can't you jailbreak over 3G? If it only takes 20 secs what's the risk?

will be getting first iphone 4 around 20th of august or whenever it gets delivered. Never had an iphone before. Will I be able to jailbreak it easily enough? I've no other experience with stuff like this on phones.

it's simples, you just visit the site www.jailbreakme.com on your phone and you're pretty much done.

The chances are, by the 20th that method will be patched as it relys on a security vulnerability regarding pdfs.

You will probably have to plug your iPhone into your computer to jailbreak, but the process is still simple enough ;]

Tried this app just there, it's way too buggy for everyday use! It knocked out my O2 coverage and did other wonky things, had to uninstall it.

Sorry but no it isn't, it's just a poorly written program, the download menu states that it's for 4.x
