I need to learn how to do SQL queries and I have kicked off my buying the book "Simply SQL" and downloading SQL Server Express and Tools. However, I am finding it very difficult to set up my working environment to put my knowledge into practice. Has anyone got ideas as to where I can seek assistance by way of web or good course.

Try MySQL you can install it pretty easliy on both windows Unix/Linux. On the MySQL official site there is a pretty decent tutorial for learning SQL.
