An Icon of my childhood and life.

Like many, I got my first bike from Joe Daly, and subsequent ones till a teenager.

I've been dropping back to Joe's for chats and browses for most of my life.

RIP Joe. I hope you find joy and are re-united.....

Such a nice man whenever I was in there. Proper gentleman.

Sad day. I also bought my 1st bike from Joe.

    Hope you're doing ok, Paul.

A sad day, rest in peace - a true gentleman.

Like many from the area, got my first bike there back in the mid 80s. Was in there twice in the last couple of weeks, had a quick chat to Joe both times, seemed in good form and was very helpful as usual. He'll be missed, the shop in an institution in Dundrum, and there was never a bad word said about Joe.

Sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a genuine LBS (local bike shop) and always offered great value on repairs and servicing (with oodles of free advice thrown in).

A great loss - my sympathies to the family. I'll miss his immaculate shop manner - he was always ready to help anyone out.

I wonder was there ever a name more synonymous with the LBS than Joe's in this country. The shop will never seem quite the same without him. RIP Joe.

Just heard about this, such sad news, like others i bought my very first bike from Joe and everytime i've been in in the past few weeks, still he was the man I dealt with, that really shows the kind of man he was, working away, helpful as ever up till the day he died. RIP Joe and condolences to his family.

    Short piece in today's IT:
THE 1987 Tour de France champion Stephen Roche has paid tribute to the man who sold him his first serious racing bike, Joe (Tansey) Daly, who died on Monday.

“I have a monument to myself in Dundrum, but Joe was himself a monument there,” Roche said yesterday from his hotel in France.

“He did a huge amount of good for cycling.”

Daly passed away after a short illness.

He was a few weeks away from his 90th birthday, yet continued to work each day in his well-known bike shop in Dundrum, showing characteristic energy.

“I heard he was ill and had planned to fly back to see him,” said Roche, who was from the area and started cycling with Orwell Wheelers, a club with a long-running connection to Daly.

Roche won the 1978 Rás Tailteann on a Raleigh 753 he bought in the shop, and remained in contact with Daly during his career and afterwards.

Daly started the business back in 1951 and helped many into the sport, both by selling bikes and giving advice, and also helping to teach children about road safety.

He played a significant part in bringing bike lanes to Dublin.

He was also a driving force behind the fundraising and construction of the monument to Roche’s stunning 1987 season, when he won the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and the World Championships.

“The reason he lived and worked so long is that this flame was burning inside him, this love and passion for the sport,” said Roche.

Daly, who was married for 50 years to his late wife Kathleen, is survived by his sons and daughters Paul, Bernadette, Francis, Catherine, David and Claire.

His removal will be this evening from Fanagans Funeral Home in Dundrum to the nearby Church of the Holy Cross, Dundrum, arriving at 5.30 pm.

His funeral mass will start at 11am tomorrow, going to Shanganagh Cemetery afterwards.

A lovely man. Used his shop for many years it will be a shame not to see him cycling about the locality anymore.

I'm very sorry to read of Joe's passing.

Like many others here, I always found Joe to be a thorough gentleman and a very nice man to talk to.
And even though I now live in Tipp, I still buy all my cycling stuff from JD's shop in Dundrum.

    RIP.

My condolences to Dave and the rest of his family.

Just saw the piece in the Times at lunchtime today. Couldn't believe he was almost 90 years of age. Sad news indeed, I lived in Churchtown and was a regular visitor to the shop in my youth, particularly in the mid to late 1970s. Happy to have called back in more recent years for bits and bobs for the kid's bikes, it was always nice to have a chat with Joe. He was a very nice man and will be sadly missed. RIP.

Just back form Joe's funeral mass, great turnout, sad, but nice to be at,and to be able to join the family to celebrate the life of a such genuine, friendly person

Lovely few words from Paul about various points in Joe's life, fond memories and great stories for both family and friends alike.

As was said in previous posts he will be sadly missed.

Rest In Peace Joe Tansey Daly.

Joe is a Tansey but he grew up with relations as was often the way of it back in the old days. Their surname was Daly and he was known around the area as Joe Daly. When he got into the bike business it made more sense to trade under the name he was best known for.
