    Hi all,

Does anybody know if they is anywhere on line where I could back up my files (currently about 20GB). I know there are commercial enterprises out there, but is there anywhere you can do it for free?

    Thanks.

I doubt you would get 20Gigs for free. I use Mozyhome & Dropbox, but both of them only give 2Gig for free.

Invest in an external hard drive if you don't want to pay for online storage.

Thanks for that. I have an external hard drive, but lets face it, if something is going to go wrong, theft, flood, accidental damage etc, it'll just be my luck that the hard drive is taken out aswell. I'll try the site that has the 25GB storage, that sounds good. My individual files are not particularly big.

    Thanks for your help.

Most free resources have limited backup sizes.
Here is a link to exploiting gmail as a free backup solution

    http://weblogs.asp.net/nleghari/pages/gmailbackup.aspx

I havent tried it but It may be suitable for someone who is trying to save a few €€€.

There are lots of online backup businesses (like ourselves) who offer backup solutions but they are not free and are aimed towards people who want automated backups and quick restoration.

Carbonite offer unlimited backup for a set fee which is cheap (you will be a long times restoring your data and if you need it back in a hurry you are stuck so beware)

If you are trying to save a few €€€ you could use backup software to backup to external hard drives and then store them off-site. Not the most convenient solution but it's an option.

    Best of luck

    Hi Micks

I've tried that site, there's 25GB of storage alright, however it will only allow you to upload files and not folders. As I have hundreds of folders, this is not reallly an option for me.

Although not free I'm using MozyHome unlimited which is about 2.50 a month, currently have 110GB backed up to it without any problems...most files are between 10-15MB each as they are RAW images

    Hi Cabaal

That sounds very reasonable. Most of my files would be smaller than this, but can you upload complete folders. Can you drag and drop like you do on the pc?

Did a bit more searching on the net and came across this site : "http://www.adrive.com/". It gives up to 50GB free storage for personal use and you can just drag and drop files and folders into it. I've registered for it and tried a few small items on it and seems to work fine.

If its important stuff you can't risk losing, you might want to consider using more than 1 such service. Also, re your point about folders, you could add the folder(s) to an archive file, e.g.zip/rar, possibly uncompressed if the content is already compressed, e.g. JPG/MP3
